The Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport stands as a testament to ambition, innovation, and determination. On Friday, January 10, 2025, another major milestone was achieved as the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) commenced calibration of the airport’s state-of-the-art landing systems. This development brings the facility closer to full commercial operations, a long-held dream for the people of Ekiti.
The journey to this point has been nothing short of remarkable. Barely a month ago, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) granted the airport a six-month approval for non-scheduled flight operations, signaling the readiness of the infrastructure. On this significant day, the calibration aircraft arrived on the pristine runway at 4:13 PM, marking the start of a crucial exercise to ensure the safety and efficiency of air navigation.
Calibration, as explained by Mr. Yinka Oyebode, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, is a critical process in the aviation industry. It involves inspecting and fine-tuning navigational aids, communication systems, and surveillance equipment to meet global aviation standards.
The event was graced by key stakeholders, including AVM Sunday Makinde (Rtd), Technical Adviser to the Governor on the Airport Project, and Chief Taiwo Olatubosun, Commissioner for Information, alongside other dignitaries. Their presence underscored the importance of the project to Ekiti’s future.
Reflecting on the airport’s progress, AVM Makinde described the day’s activities as a defining moment. “This calibration exercise confirms that the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport is not only ready but capable of handling any type of aircraft. It’s a pivotal step toward securing final approval for commercial operations,” he said.
Commissioner Olatubosun echoed this sentiment, describing the airport as a “dream come true.” He emphasized its potential to open new economic opportunities, attract investors, and boost tourism in the state. “This airport is more than infrastructure; it’s a catalyst for socio-economic transformation, connecting Ekiti to both local and international markets,” he added.
The airport’s completion and readiness reflect Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s commitment to Ekiti’s development. By prioritizing this project, the administration has not only elevated the state’s status but also reaffirmed its vision for sustainable growth.
As the NAMA team concludes its work and the June 15 target for scheduled flights draws near, the excitement is palpable. This airport is more than a transportation hub—it’s a bridge to a brighter, more connected future for Ekiti State.
