In a remarkable display of prompt and efficient response, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Rescue Team successfully deboarded 256 individuals from a United Airlines Boeing 787-800 aircraft that was forced to make an emergency return to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on the early hours of January 24, 2025. The aircraft had initially departed from MMIA at 23:59 on January 23 but was forced to return just hours later, landing safely at 03:22 following a distress signal from the pilot at 01:20.

On board the flight were 245 adults and 11 crew members. FAAN’s well-coordinated emergency response teams, including the Acrodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS), Aviation Medical, and Aviation Security (AVSEC), were already stationed at the gate and ready for action. The aircraft safely parked at D31 at 03:37, allowing for an organized and swift deboarding operation. All passengers and crew disembarked without incident, though four passengers and two crew members sustained serious injuries, while 27 passengers and five crew members were treated for minor injuries.

Aviation Medical teams, with support from ambulances, transported the injured to the MMA Clinic and Headquarters Clinic for immediate care. Those with minor injuries received first aid and were quickly discharged, while the more seriously injured were stabilized before being transferred to the Duchess Hospital in Ikeja for further treatment. Additionally, some of the uninjured passengers were accommodated in a nearby hotel.

The aircraft itself did not sustain any major damage, and the coordinated efforts of the rescue team ensured that all passengers and crew were accounted for and cared for swiftly.

FAAN continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as necessary.
