“NiMet Unveils 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction: Pioneering Early Warnings for a Resilient Future”

On February 4, 2025, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) held its annual public presentation of the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja.The event, themed “The Role of Early Warnings Towards a Climate-Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development  while Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Mr Festus Keyamo will serve as special guest and others diverse audience, including government officials, private sector stakeholders, development partners, non-governmental organizations, and representatives from various industries.

Professor Charles Anosike, NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the critical importance of early warning systems in mitigating the adverse effects of climate variability. He highlighted NiMet’s commitment to providing accurate and timely climate information to support decision-making across multiple sectors.

The 2025 SCP document presented comprehensive climate forecasts, including:

  • Onset and cessation dates of the rainy season: Providing farmers with essential information for planning their planting and harvesting schedules.
  • Length of the cropping season: Offering insights into the expected duration of the growing period, crucial for agricultural productivity.
  • Total expected rainfall across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas: Assisting in water resource management and flood preparedness.
  • Temperature forecasts for January through May: Informing sectors such as health and energy on potential heat-related challenges.
  • Health-related predictions, including malaria and meningitis vigilance forecasts: Aiding healthcare providers in anticipating and managing climate-sensitive diseases.

In his address, Professor Anosike stated, “The Seasonal Climate Prediction highlights vital weather and climate information that may affect socio-economic activities in various sectors during the year, including agriculture, aviation, disaster risk management, health, oil and gas, telecommunications, tourism, transport, power, and water resources management.”

Reflecting on the event, stakeholders acknowledged the indispensable role of NiMet’s SCP in national planning and development. The detailed forecasts have become a cornerstone for policymakers, businesses, and communities striving to build resilience against climate-related challenges.

The 2025 SCP not only reinforced NiMet’s position as a leader in meteorological services but also underscored the agency’s dedication to leveraging science and technology for the nation’s sustainable development.
