As Nigeria prepares for the unveiling of the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on February 4, it is a moment to reflect on the impact of past climate forecasts and their role in shaping national policies and economic resilience.

Over the years, NiMet’s climate predictions have served as a compass for various sectors, guiding decision-making in agriculture, aviation, water resources, and disaster risk management. From the devastating floods of 2012 to the prolonged droughts experienced in the northern regions, early warnings have played a crucial role in mitigating losses and ensuring preparedness.

One of the most remarkable milestones in NiMet’s history was its 2017 Seasonal Climate Prediction, which accurately forecasted excessive rainfall in key regions. This warning prompted early intervention measures by state governments and farmers, saving thousands of hectares of crops and reducing flood-related casualties. Similarly, in 2020, NiMet’s timely advisory on an extended harmattan season helped the aviation industry recalibrate flight schedules, preventing widespread disruptions.

This year’s SCP, themed “The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate-Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development,” underscores the agency’s commitment to strengthening climate resilience. With rising concerns over climate change, the document will not only predict rainfall and temperature patterns but also provide crucial insights into malaria and meningitis risks, directly impacting public health planning.

As Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, leads the official presentation, stakeholders from across the public and private sectors, development agencies, and farmer associations will once again look to NiMet’s guidance. The SCP remains more than just a forecast—it is a national asset that informs policy, protects lives, and safeguards livelihoods.
