In recognition of his transformative leadership and proactive contributions to Nigeria’s aviation and meteorological sectors, Professor Charles Anosike, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has been named Aviation Sector CEO of the Year 2024 by Independent Newspapers Limited.
The Board of Editors of the publication selected Professor Anosike for the prestigious award, citing his dynamic efforts in repositioning NiMet within a short period and enhancing its impact across socio-economic sectors through strategic local and international partnerships.
Acknowledging Excellence in Meteorology & Aviation
Presenting the nomination letter at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja, Mr. Steve Omanufeme, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Independent Newspapers, emphasized that the recognition stems from NiMet’s critical interventions in early warning systems, particularly in mitigating climate-related disasters such as floods, which have significantly threatened farmlands, infrastructure, and lives across Nigeria.
“We particularly note your agency’s issuance of early warnings aimed at preventing loss of property, including farmlands, and lives, especially due to climate change, which is a threat multiplier,” the letter read.
The Board also highlighted NiMet’s groundbreaking collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in linking meteorological data with public health initiatives, enhancing national preparedness for climate-sensitive diseases like cholera and malaria. This partnership has advanced data-sharing, predictive modeling, and risk assessment, further strengthening disease response mechanisms.
Furthermore, the re-accreditation of NiMet’s Regional Training School in Oshodi, Lagos, by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva was cited as another milestone that underscores NiMet’s commitment to international best practices and human capital development.
Anosike’s Response: A Dedication to Service & Innovation
Expressing gratitude for the honor, Professor Anosike thanked the Board of Editors of Independent Newspapers for deeming him a worthy recipient.
“This recognition is a motivation to further strengthen NiMet’s mandate, ensuring that we deliver on our responsibilities to Nigerians and critical stakeholders,” he stated.
He also appreciated the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, for his leadership and unwavering support in driving innovation within the agency.
