Preliminary Report on Hawker 900XP Aircraft Incident in Abuja
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has released its preliminary report on the December 6, 2024, incident involving a Hawker 900XP aircraft (5N-KAL) operated by Flybird Aircraft Management Services Limited at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
According to Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance, NSIB, the aircraft was en route to Kotoka International Airport, Accra, Ghana, when it encountered a severe in-flight emergency during its climb at Flight Level 260.
At altitude, the flight crew heard a loud bang from Engine Number 2, followed by a sharp temperature increase and abnormal vibrations. In response, the crew reduced engine power and declared an emergency, requesting an immediate air return to Abuja.
However, while descending, Engine Number 2 experienced another temperature spike, and the crew soon discovered that Engine Number 1 was unresponsive to thrust commands. Despite the critical situation, the pilots successfully landed the aircraft at 18:16 local time, ensuring the safe evacuation of all four occupants (three crew members and one passenger) without injury. No structural damage to the aircraft was reported.

The NSIB’s preliminary findings recommend a detailed inspection of both engines to determine the root cause of the power failure and thrust anomalies. A review of the aircraft’s engine maintenance records is also underway.
The full preliminary report is now available for download on the NSIB website. The investigation remains ongoing, with a final report expected to provide comprehensive safety recommendations aimed at enhancing aviation safety and preventing future occurrences.
