At the prestigious African Leadership Persons of the Year 2025 event in Casablanca, Morocco, on March 21, 2025, Professor Charles Anosike, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), delivered a compelling speech on leadership. He emphasized that great leaders “bring the weather and set the climate” within their teams by serving as role models for interactions and engagement.
Drawing a distinction between weather and climate, he remarked, “The weather changes tomorrow, but the climate is experienced every day. Great leaders lead by doing!” This philosophy, he noted, is fundamental to shaping a productive and cohesive work environment.
Reflecting on his journey, Professor Anosike expressed deep appreciation for the unwavering support of Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, and his dedicated team at NiMet. He also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the leadership of an institution with over 130 years of meteorological excellence since its establishment in 1887 at Akassa, present-day Bayelsa State.
Professor Anosike highlighted NiMet’s pivotal role in national development, particularly in sustainable agriculture, disaster risk management, and climate change adaptation. The agency’s early warning systems, he explained, are crucial for enabling farmers to adopt climate-smart practices, helping vulnerable communities mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
He further underscored NiMet’s commitment to collaboration and innovation, noting ongoing partnerships with funding bodies and the private sector to upgrade weather observation networks and strengthen early warning systems. According to him, resilience in the face of climate change is a strategic imperative for economic growth and food security.
“Our success is built on teamwork, stakeholder engagement, and a culture of collaboration. Leadership is not an individual property; it is an emergent property of a well-functioning system,” he concluded.
As a testament to his impactful leadership, Professor Anosike has been named a recipient of the African Public Sector Leadership Impact Award. He will be formally honored at the awards ceremony scheduled for February 22, 2025.
