EFCC Questions Ex-Minister Uju Ohanenye Over Alleged N138M Fund Diversion: A Reflection on Her Fall from Grace

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday subjected former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, to intense questioning over allegations of financial mismanagement, procurement violations, and the diversion of public funds amounting to N138 million. The funds in question were part of the 2023 budget allocated to her ministry.

Ohanenye’s interrogation is the latest chapter in a dramatic downfall that began with her removal from office in October 2024. Her dismissal was part of a broader cabinet shake-up by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which saw five ministers lose their positions.

According to EFCC investigators, the former minister allegedly diverted funds meant for the P-BAT Cares for Women Initiative, a program designed to support vulnerable women, for personal gain. The case has raised fresh concerns over accountability in government-funded social programs.

A Look Back: The Rise and Fall

Uju Ohanenye’s tenure as Minister of Women Affairs was initially marked by strong advocacy for gender equality and women empowerment initiatives. However, as time progressed, whispers of financial mismanagement and irregularities began to emerge.

Her removal from office in 2024 sparked speculations about possible misconduct, though no formal charges were made at the time. Now, with the EFCC’s investigation in full swing, her legacy is at risk of being overshadowed by allegations of corruption.

Despite facing intense scrutiny, Ohanenye has yet to be granted administrative bail, signaling the seriousness of the case. The coming weeks will determine whether she clears her name or becomes another high-profile casualty in Nigeria’s ongoing anti-corruption crusade.
