Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, has thrown his weight behind Nigeria’s senior national team, expressing confidence in their ability to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their current struggles in the qualifiers.

Okocha, who starred for Nigeria at three previous World Cups, acknowledged the uphill task ahead but maintained that all hope is not lost. The three-time African champions currently sit fourth in their qualification group after a crucial away win in Rwanda was followed by a disappointing 1-1 home draw against Zimbabwe.

That result leaves Nigeria six points adrift of group leaders South Africa, with just four games remaining in the qualification series. However, Okocha remains optimistic, urging the squad to focus on winning all their remaining matches.

“If we want to give ourselves any chance of qualifying, we have to be thinking of winning all our remaining matches,” Okocha told iDiski Times.

“Of course, Bafana Bafana are top in the group. It will be a difficult game to play, but we still believe we can go there and win. If we want to qualify, those are the games we need to win. I believe we can win there, but it’s definitely not going to be easy,” he added.

With fixtures still to come, the former playmaker called on both the players and fans to remain united in belief, stating that resilience and determination could yet deliver Nigeria’s ticket to the 2026 World Cup.
