A prominent African airline has announced a major fare reduction on its Lagos route, offering Nigerian passengers discounted tickets to Dubai, Mumbai, and Delhi, alongside a more generous baggage allowance.

The offer, which includes up to 46kg of checked luggage for economy-class travellers, has been welcomed by Nigerian customers, particularly those travelling for medical, business, and educational purposes.

Industry stakeholders view the move as a strategic bid to capture a larger share of the competitive West African market. Nigeria remains one of the continent’s busiest international travel hubs, with high demand on routes to the Middle East and Asia.

“This development couldn’t have come at a better time,” said a textile importer who frequently travels between Lagos and Mumbai. “Ticket prices have been very high in recent years, and baggage limits have made it more expensive for those of us doing business abroad. This offer is a welcome relief.”

Air travel analysts believe the new fare structure could prompt a pricing review across other international carriers serving Nigeria, especially those flying into Dubai and Indian cities.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, airlines on Nigerian routes regularly offered competitive fares and baggage-friendly policies. However, pandemic-related disruptions, coupled with foreign exchange challenges, led to a sharp rise in airfares, pricing many travellers out of the market.

The airline’s latest offer marks a return to more customer-focused pricing and could signal the beginning of a broader trend among carriers seeking to re-establish market confidence.

“It’s a calculated move that directly addresses two of the biggest concerns for Nigerian travellers—cost and baggage flexibility,” said an aviation analyst based in Lagos. “The question now is whether competing airlines will follow suit or risk losing passengers.”

With international travel gradually rebounding and more Nigerians taking to the skies again, this announcement is expected to have ripple effects across the industry, potentially ushering in a more competitive and passenger-friendly phase in regional aviation.
