The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has ramped up its offensive against fuel smuggling with the deployment of newly inducted officers to Operation Whirlwind, a tactical anti-smuggling unit launched in May 2024 to curb the illegal movement of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) across Nigeria’s borders.
At an induction ceremony held in Abuja on Tuesday, June 3, Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting the nation’s economic interests and ensuring fuel availability within Nigeria.
“We must always remain above board in all matters,” Adeniyi told the officers. “Ensure your integrity is never compromised and that you are never found abusing your position during this operation. Customs is central to achieving the government’s goal of ensuring steady fuel supply for Nigerians.”
The CGC also emphasized the need for a tech-driven approach to enforcement, revealing that officers will receive specialized training to utilize Geospatial Intelligence tools in the field.
“We’re deploying cutting-edge technology to monitor and intercept smuggling routes. These tools will give you the upper hand in your assignments,” he added.
Speaking at the event, Assistant Comptroller-General Hussein Ejibunu, who serves as the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, urged the newly inducted officers to uphold the momentum already established by the unit.
“This mission requires strategic execution, discipline, and personal commitment. You are joining a critical national assignment—maintain the tempo and deliver results,” Ejibunu said.
Since its launch, Operation Whirlwind has played a vital role in disrupting cross-border fuel smuggling networks, a challenge that has long plagued Nigeria’s fuel supply chain and drained government revenues through illicit trade.
With the latest deployment, the NCS is not only reinforcing manpower but also reasserting its strategic resolve to secure Nigeria’s petroleum distribution system and economic integrity.
