The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) has congratulated the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his landmark election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO).
In a congratulatory statement signed by AMJON President, Mr. Kelvin Kagbare, the association described Adeniyi’s election as a well-deserved global recognition of his exceptional leadership, dedication, and contributions to Customs administration and trade facilitation in Nigeria and beyond.
Kagbare highlighted that Adeniyi’s rise to the helm of the WCO reflects his outstanding career achievements, having served most of his professional life as a career Customs officer and the image maker of the NCS. He commended the Comptroller General for his visionary leadership which, in just two years, has driven remarkable reforms across the Service.
“His tenure has witnessed notable improvements in trade facilitation, significant revenue growth, enhanced staff welfare, and strengthened border security operations,” Kagbare said.
According to AMJON, Adeniyi’s commitment to modernising Nigeria’s Customs operations and advancing maritime trade earned him this prestigious international appointment. The association further praised his efforts in enhancing the public perception of the Nigeria Customs Service through consistent stakeholder engagement and impactful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives across the country.
Kagbare noted that as Chairperson of the WCO—a 73-year-old global policy-making body—Adeniyi is well-positioned to champion international cooperation, drive Customs modernisation, and support capacity building for member countries. His leadership, AMJON said, is expected to promote seamless international trade and foster global economic growth.
“This achievement is not only a personal victory for CGC Adeniyi but also a proud moment for Nigeria and the entire maritime community. It demonstrates Nigeria’s rising influence in global Customs and trade affairs,” Kagbare stated.
AMJON expressed optimism that Adeniyi’s tenure will promote Nigeria’s interests, strengthen regional integration, and encourage knowledge exchange among Customs administrations worldwide.
The association also extended appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his confidence in Adeniyi’s leadership, and to the Secretary-General and leadership of the WCO for endorsing his election.
“We believe his leadership will inspire positive change and set new benchmarks for excellence in the global Customs community. We warmly congratulate CGC Adeniyi on this historic appointment and look forward to the positive impact of his leadership on international trade and Customs operations,” the statement concluded.
