L–R: Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, receives the WSIS 2025 Prize (Category C3: Access to Information and Knowledge) from the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Doreen Bogdan-Martin, following the selection of the Commission’s Digital Awareness Programme (DAP) as winner of the category.
Nigeria’s digital transformation efforts received global acclaim on Monday as the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, was presented with the WSIS 2025 Prize in recognition of the Commission’s Digital Awareness Programme (DAP).
The award, in the highly competitive Category C3: Access to Information and Knowledge, was conferred by the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Doreen Bogdan-Martin, at the annual World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes Ceremony in Geneva.
The NCC’s Digital Awareness Programme, which promotes ICT access and digital literacy among students and underserved communities across Nigeria, stood out from dozens of global submissions. The initiative has impacted thousands of young Nigerians, equipping schools with ICT tools and bridging the digital divide in both urban and rural areas.
Speaking shortly after receiving the award, Dr. Maida described the honour as a testament to Nigeria’s progress in leveraging technology for social inclusion and economic development.
“This award reflects our commitment to fostering digital inclusion and empowering Nigerians through access to ICT tools and knowledge. Through the DAP, we have created opportunities for learning, innovation, and growth for thousands of young people across the country,” Maida said.
He dedicated the award to the people of Nigeria, the NCC team, and all stakeholders who have supported the programme’s implementation over the years.
ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin praised the NCC’s efforts, describing the Digital Awareness Programme as a model initiative that advances the WSIS vision of inclusive information societies.
“The NCC’s work demonstrates how targeted ICT initiatives can transform lives, expand access to information, and create opportunities in developing economies,” she said.
The WSIS Prizes are globally recognised awards that celebrate outstanding digital solutions aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Category C3 specifically honours projects that enhance universal access to information and knowledge through ICT innovation.
Since its inception, the NCC’s Digital Awareness Programme has provided ICT tools to over 600 secondary schools across Nigeria, trained thousands of students and teachers, and championed the cause of digital literacy.
The global recognition highlights Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa’s ICT ecosystem and reaffirms the NCC’s commitment to building a digitally inclusive future for all Nigerians.
