In a deliberate move to deepen judicial understanding of Nigeria’s pension system and promote fairness in the administration of retirement benefits, the National Pension Commission (PenCom) has organized a high-level Sensitization Workshop on the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) for Honourable Judges of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) in Abuja.

The workshop, themed around “Strengthening the Legal and Regulatory Framework for Effective Pension Administration in Nigeria,” provided an engaging platform for dialogue between PenCom and the judiciary. It explored the critical intersection between labour rights and pension rights, emphasizing the judiciary’s role in protecting the integrity of the nation’s pension laws and ensuring justice for Nigerian workers.

In her welcome address, Director-General of PenCom, Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, stated that the sensitization workshop was designed to bridge knowledge gaps and promote synergy between the judiciary and the pension regulator. According to her, the Commission’s mandate extends beyond regulation to ensuring that contributors’ funds are adequately protected and that retirees receive their benefits promptly and transparently.

“This engagement aims to deepen understanding of the Contributory Pension Scheme, strengthen collaboration between PenCom and the judiciary, and ultimately enhance the effectiveness of pension law enforcement in Nigeria,”
Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, Director-General, PenCom

She reaffirmed PenCom’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability, which are foundational to the CPS and the broader pension reform architecture.

Delivering the keynote address, Hon. Justice Benedict Kanyip, PhD, OFR, President of the NICN, emphasized that pension rights are human rights closely tied to social justice. He described pension administration as a moral and legal obligation that guarantees the dignity of labour and ensures post-employment security for workers who have dedicated years of service to the nation.

“Pensions represent a pillar of social justice. When workers are assured of their retirement security, it strengthens industrial harmony and trust in the system,”
Hon. Justice Benedict Kanyip, President, NICN

The sessions explored practical and legal issues affecting pension administration, including:

  • Clarifying Retirement Benefits Administration: Ensuring compliance, transparency, and efficiency in managing contributors’ funds.
  • Strengthening Pension Jurisprudence: Enhancing judicial interpretation and consistency in pension-related rulings.
  • Addressing Accrued Benefits: Providing clarity on pre-CPS entitlements and transition arrangements.
  • Promoting Fairness and Transparency: Reinforcing accountability mechanisms within the pension system.

Experts and facilitators from PenCom further provided insights into emerging trends in pension regulation, dispute resolution, and compliance enforcement, stressing the importance of judicial cooperation in protecting contributors and retirees alike.

The workshop concluded with a shared understanding that judicial interpretation of pension laws plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of Nigeria’s retirement security system. Both institutions pledged to continue collaboration to promote a robust, fair, and sustainable pension regime that safeguards the interests of Nigerian workers and retirees.

PenCom’s sensitization drive reflects its ongoing mission to uphold the objectives of the Pension Reform Act and strengthen confidence in the CPS framework as a key component of Nigeria’s social protection systems
