As the clock ticks toward November 10, 2025, the excitement within Nigeria’s aviation community continues to build. United Nigeria Airlines (UNA), one of the country’s fastest-growing carriers, is finalizing preparations to commence its highly anticipated regional flight services from Abuja to Accra and Lagos to Accra simultaneously — a landmark move that will officially extend its operations beyond Nigeria’s borders.
The airline’s announcement marks a major step in its evolution from a domestic operator to a regional player in West Africa’s aviation space. Industry observers describe the development as a significant leap forward for United Nigeria Airlines and a milestone for Nigeria’s aviation industry, which has long sought stronger footprints within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
A Vision Taking Flight
Since its inception in 2021, United Nigeria Airlines has maintained an ambitious growth strategy focused on reliability, affordability, and passenger comfort. In just four years, the airline has successfully connected key Nigerian cities including Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Asaba, and Owerri, while recording commendable safety and on-time performance.
The upcoming Abuja–Accra and Lagos–Accra routes are not just an expansion of services — they are a realization of the airline’s long-term vision to connect Nigeria with its African neighbours. The airline has worked meticulously with both Nigerian and Ghanaian aviation authorities, securing the required operational clearances and strengthening its compliance with international safety standards, including the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification.
Speaking about the launch, Chief Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman and CEO of United Nigeria Airlines, described the regional debut as a defining moment in the company’s journey.
“Our dream has always been to make air travel between African countries easier, safer, and more affordable. This expansion into Ghana marks a critical step toward building an interconnected African airspace, starting with one of the busiest routes in West Africa,”
he said in a pre-launch briefing.
Bridging Borders and Boosting Trade
The Abuja–Accra and Lagos–Accra routes are among the most in-demand regional corridors in West Africa, serving thousands of business travelers, government officials, students, and tourists every month. Analysts believe the entry of United Nigeria Airlines will enhance competition, improve service standards, and potentially drive down fares — creating a win-win situation for both nations.
Aviation analyst Captain John Adegbite emphasized that the development is timely:
“The expansion by United Nigeria Airlines aligns perfectly with Nigeria’s goal of becoming a major aviation hub in Africa. It will not only facilitate travel but also boost trade, investment, and cultural exchange between Nigeria and Ghana.”
The move also supports the broader economic agenda of the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, which has repeatedly encouraged indigenous carriers to explore regional and continental routes as a way of reducing dependence on foreign airlines and conserving foreign exchange earnings.
Operational Readiness and Passenger Experience
As November 10 approaches, sources within the airline confirm that crew training, route familiarization, and safety audits have been completed. The inaugural flights will reportedly feature simultaneous ceremonies at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, with attendance from aviation regulators, diplomats, business leaders, and media partners.
United Nigeria Airlines is also enhancing its passenger experience with new digital booking options, in-flight comfort upgrades, and customer loyalty programs aimed at rewarding frequent travelers. The airline’s management has assured passengers that its regional operations will maintain the same standards of punctuality and service quality that have defined its domestic success.
A New Era for Nigerian Aviation
This expansion underscores United Nigeria Airlines’ determination to position itself as a pan-African carrier with a distinctly Nigerian identity. Industry experts see this move as a prelude to future destinations across West and Central Africa, potentially including Abidjan, Monrovia, and Freetown.
By taking this bold step, the airline joins other Nigerian carriers such as Air Peace and Green Africa Airways in pursuing regional dominance. However, its unique approach — launching dual inaugural flights from both Abuja and Lagos — symbolizes inclusivity, connecting Nigeria’s political capital and commercial hub directly to Ghana’s vibrant capital, Accra.
As aviation enthusiasts count down to November 10, United Nigeria Airlines stands at the threshold of a new era — one defined by growth, regional integration, and national pride. The skies between Nigeria and Ghana are set to become busier, more competitive, and more connected than ever before.
