The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) is set to recognize the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Dr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his visionary leadership and groundbreaking reforms during the 2025 AMJON Conference, scheduled for Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Rockview Hotel, GRA Apapa, Lagos.
Dr. Adeniyi has transformed the NCS into a globally respected institution, earning him the Chairmanship of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council. AMJON cited him as the most impactful CEO in Nigeria’s maritime sector, noting the service’s unprecedented prominence under his stewardship.
Central to his achievements is the Unified Customs Management System (UCMS), also known as B’Odogwu, which has streamlined revenue collection across the country. Despite early challenges, the system has revolutionized trade facilitation, enhanced operational efficiency, and contributed significantly to national revenue generation.
AMJON Acting President, Vera Osokpo, highlighted Dr. Adeniyi’s robust stakeholder engagement, industrial harmony promotion, and strategic initiatives that have strengthened Nigeria’s marine and blue economy sectors. “His leadership has made Nigeria a more attractive destination for investment and seamless trade,” Osokpo said.
Also being honored is NCS Spokesman, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Aliyu Maiwada, recognized for his excellence in public relations, crisis communication, and digital media innovation. Osokpo described Maiwada as a trailblazer in leveraging social media, artificial intelligence, and multimedia platforms to disseminate timely and accurate customs information nationwide.
Under Maiwada’s guidance, the Nigeria Customs Broadcasting Network (NCBN) and verified social media channels have become a model for transparency and engagement in the maritime sector. His team of young communicators has raised the bar for media interaction within the service, ensuring critical updates reach the public efficiently.
Beyond individual recognition, AMJON will honor commands, organizations, and other stakeholders contributing to excellence and innovation in Nigeria’s maritime industry. The awards underscore the association’s commitment to promoting leadership, modernization, and strategic impact in the blue economy.
The 2025 AMJON Conference promises not only knowledge exchange among maritime stakeholders but also a celebration of trailblazers whose vision and dedication continue to drive growth, operational excellence, and international recognition for Nigeria’s maritime sector.
The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) will honor Customs CG Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and Spokesman Abdullahi Maiwada for pioneering reforms, digital innovation, and exemplary service during the 2025 AMJON Conference in Lagos.
