The Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has restated the Agency’s strong commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s airspace safety system through strategic investment in personnel development, training, and workplace culture.

Delivering his opening remarks through the Director of Human Resources and Administration, Abimbola Ladipo, Esq., the NAMA boss addressed participants at the 2025 Directorate of Air Traffic Services (ATS) Retreat held in Ibadan, Oyo State. The retreat brought together Directors, General Managers, Heads of Divisions, and senior Air Traffic Services professionals from across the country.

He described the gathering as both timely and essential given the rapidly evolving global aviation landscape and the increasing complexity of Nigeria’s airspace.

According to him, Ibadan’s historic ambience offers the ideal setting for reflection and strategic planning as NAMA works to strengthen its institutional capacity.

Air Traffic Controllers: “Guardians of Nigeria’s Skies”

The NAMA MD praised ATS personnel for their devotion, precision, and professionalism, describing them as “silent yet vigilant guardians who ensure order and predictability in our skies.”

Despite the pressure and fast-paced nature of their work, he said they continue to uphold the highest standards of safety, making them central to Nigeria’s aviation success story.

Safety Is Delivered by People—Not Technology Alone

Speaking on the retreat theme, “Empowering People, Elevating Safety: Advancing Air Traffic Services Through Training and Culture,” he emphasized that Nigeria’s aviation future will be shaped not just by technology but by the people trained to operate it.

He stressed that even the most advanced systems depend on capable and confident professionals who interpret critical information, make quick decisions, and ensure safe airspace management.

“We must acknowledge a simple truth: safety is ultimately delivered by people. Technology is only as effective as the professionals who manage it,” he said.

A Call for Strategic Reflection and Innovation

The retreat, he noted, offers a valuable opportunity for the Directorate to examine emerging global trends, align with evolving ICAO standards, and identify the gaps that must be urgently addressed.

More importantly, he urged participants to renew their commitment to ethics, integrity, and professional excellence—the foundational pillars upon which aviation safety is built.

NAMA’s Modernization Drive and Workforce Support

Reaffirming Management’s support, the MD highlighted ongoing efforts to modernize Nigeria’s air navigation infrastructure, expand capacity-building programmes, and strengthen leadership development across the Agency.

He also pledged improved workplace culture where every officer feels supported, valued, and motivated to reach peak professional performance.

Collaboration for a Safer Airspace

He encouraged ATS professionals to participate actively, ask critical questions, and propose solutions that will enhance the Directorate’s efficiency and Nigeria’s air navigation service delivery.

Management, he said, will rely on the outcomes of the retreat to shape new policies and strategic interventions.

Commendation to ATS Leadership

The NAMA MD concluded by commending the Directorate of Air Traffic Services for its consistent leadership and unwavering dedication to maintaining safety and operational excellence within Nigeria’s aviation sector.

“Your contributions are vital, your roles indispensable, and your efforts sincerely appreciated,” he stated.

The retreat is expected to produce far-reaching recommendations that will further strengthen the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the nation’s airspace management architecture.
