At the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the past two years have been defined by significant strides in operational efficiency, passenger safety, and international compliance, according to Capt. Abdullahi Zubeir Mahmood, Director of Airport Operations. His reflections come as the authority celebrates the second anniversary of Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku as Managing Director and Chief Executive.
Capt. Mahmood highlighted the successful certification of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, as the most prominent milestones achieved under Mrs. Kuku’s leadership. He described the certifications as crucial benchmarks that align Nigeria’s busiest airports with international aviation safety and operational standards.
“I am proud to report that over the past two years, we have achieved significant milestones, most notably the certification of MMIA, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja,” Capt. Mahmood said.

He added that efforts are ongoing to certify the remaining international airports and secure operational approvals for all domestic airports, ensuring nationwide adherence to global standards. These initiatives aim to standardize operations, enhance passenger experience, and strengthen safety oversight across Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Capt. Mahmood credited these achievements to Mrs. Kuku’s proactive leadership style, noting that she has consistently tackled operational and safety challenges head-on while promoting accountability and efficiency within FAAN.
“Her effective stewardship over the past two years has significantly strengthened coordination and operational excellence across our airports,” he said, emphasizing the tangible improvements in efficiency and passenger safety standards that have already been realized.
The Director of Airport Operations also noted that these reforms are already enhancing passenger experience and boosting the credibility of Nigeria’s airport operations on the international stage. Under Mrs. Kuku’s leadership, FAAN has steadily positioned itself as a model for operational excellence in Africa.
As FAAN continues its drive to certify all airports and elevate operational standards, Capt. Mahmood expressed confidence that Nigeria’s airport system is on course to become safer, more efficient, and globally competitive.
Observers in the aviation sector say the achievements highlighted by Capt. Mahmood underscore the success of Mrs. Kuku’s tenure, marking a new era of professionalism, transparency, and strategic leadership within Nigeria’s airport operations.
