Speaking during the airline’s 5th Anniversary World Press Conference at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, Okonkwo described the milestone as more than a corporate celebration, calling it “the fulfilment of a dream born in one of the most difficult periods in global aviation history.”
A Pandemic-Era Birth That Defied Odds
United Nigeria Airlines launched its inaugural Lagos–Enugu flight on February 12, 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 crisis—when international borders were closed, airlines were collapsing, and uncertainty dominated global travel.
According to Okonkwo, that masked inaugural flight symbolised faith, courage, and national possibility, setting the foundation for what has become one of Nigeria’s most closely watched aviation growth stories.
Five years later, the airline’s ability to withstand pandemic disruption, foreign-exchange scarcity, currency volatility, and regulatory pressures stands as its defining achievement.
Fleet Growth, Passenger Confidence, Operational Maturity
The carrier began with four Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft, deliberately selected for cautious route development and operational learning.
Today, it operates ten aircraft across multiple capacity categories, reflecting measured expansion, improved passenger confidence, and strengthening operational structure.
Okonkwo noted that service quality and reliability remain central to the airline’s strategy to redefine domestic aviation standards in Nigeria.
Safety Certification, Global Standards, and Talent Development
Within a short operational window, United Nigeria Airlines secured the globally recognised IOSA safety certification and attained IATA membership, reinforcing compliance with international aviation best practices.
Beyond regulatory milestones, the airline has invested heavily in human capital development, training pilots, engineers, cabin crew, dispatchers, and university interns—many of whom achieved outstanding academic performance and later joined the aviation workforce.
Navigating COVID-19 and Economic Headwinds
Okonkwo recounted severe operational setbacks during the pandemic, including:
Pilots stranded overseas for months
Aircraft placed in long-term foreign preservation
Heavy financial strain from naira devaluation and forex shortages
Despite these shocks, the airline survived—transforming crisis into credibility.
Next Phase: From National Carrier to Continental Player
Under the anniversary theme,
“From Vision to Velocity: Five Years of United Growth, Charting the Next Frontiers,”
the airline unveiled a strategic roadmap built on three pillars:

New initiatives include:
Harmony in-flight magazine
Unity Rewards loyalty programme
United Nigeria Airlines Foundation, targeting education, healthcare, aviation training, and community development nationwide
Regional, Continental, and Intercontinental Ambitions
Okonkwo announced plans to begin regional and continental operations in 2026, covering key destinations in Africa and the Middle East.
Most significantly, the airline is preparing for a direct Lagos–New York intercontinental service, supported by incoming Airbus A330-200 aircraft, alongside multiple Boeing 737-800NG deliveries for regional expansion.
By the end of the year, the fleet is expected to grow by 10–11 additional aircraft, dramatically increasing operational reach.
Building Nigeria’s Aviation Ecosystem
Beyond expansion, the airline is investing in:
Future Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) capability
Local engineering capacity
Workforce growth from about 250 to nearly 1,000 employees, with projections to exceed 2,000
Okonkwo said the goal is to reduce dependence on foreign maintenance services while strengthening Nigeria’s aviation value chain.

He credited progress to loyal passengers, committed staff, supportive financiers, global aircraft manufacturers, regulators, and government aviation reforms, stressing that sustained collaboration is essential for a globally competitive Nigerian aviation sector.

Five years after launching in the shadow of a global shutdown, United Nigeria Airlines is now positioning for continental relevance and intercontinental connectivity.
