The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Abdullahi Ganduje, on Thursday visited the fire-affected Terminal One of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) to assess the extent of damage caused by the recent blaze.
Accompanied by members of the FAAN Board, Ganduje described the incident as “an issue of great concern,” noting that safety remains the core value of the authority. The fire, he emphasized, disrupted the operational safety of the airport, affected employees, passengers, and damaged sensitive equipment and infrastructural facilities.
“Safety is at the heart of everything we do at FAAN,” Ganduje told reporters in Lagos. “We decided to come and see the situation for ourselves, because seeing is believing. While the damage is significant, I want to commend the Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, her management team, and over 150 firefighters who worked tirelessly to ensure the fire was completely extinguished. Thankfully, no lives were lost.”
He noted that while the official damage report is still pending, early observations show that several critical equipment were destroyed. However, Ganduje reassured stakeholders that FAAN staff are fully capable of managing the aftermath.
“I believe the situation is under control, thanks to the efforts of all involved. We also appreciate the role of the press in keeping the public informed during this unfortunate incident,” he added.
The FAAN Chairman also took the opportunity to inspect the ongoing remodeling of the airport and the temporary terminal. He praised the quality of work, remarking that the facilities rival those of well-developed international airports.
“It is impressive. I felt as though I was visiting a world-class international airport abroad. But this is Nigeria, in Lagos. The renovation and equipment installation are of high quality, and I am confident that this marks a significant success in our aviation reform program,” Ganduje stated.
FAAN management continues to work on restoring full operational capacity at MMIA, with emphasis on ensuring passenger safety and airport efficiency.:
