The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has taken a major step to reinforce Nigeria’s aviation security framework with the launch of its inaugural Aviation Security Awareness Training programme in Abuja.
The training, organised on February 26, 2026, by the Directorate of Aviation Security Regulations (DAVSEC), signals a proactive shift towards strengthening internal vigilance, addressing insider risks, and embedding a sustainable security culture across the aviation ecosystem.
Held in compliance with national aviation regulations and global standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the one-day programme brought together over 50 participants drawn from various directorates within the Authority, as well as officials from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
DGCA: Training Critical to Staying Ahead of Emerging Threats
Declaring the event open, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Capt. Chris Najomo — represented by the Director of Airworthiness Standards, Engr. Godwin Balang — reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to fostering a security-conscious workforce capable of responding to evolving global threats.
He noted that aviation security challenges are increasingly dynamic and complex, requiring continuous investment in human capacity development.
“As threats evolve globally, the aviation industry must stay several steps ahead. Effective aviation security training is not just a regulatory requirement; it is fundamental to the safety, security, and resilience of Nigeria’s civil aviation system,” he stated.
The DGCA emphasised that strengthening internal awareness mechanisms would enhance public confidence in Nigeria’s air transport system and ensure operational continuity across airports and allied facilities.
Tackling Insider Threats and Regulatory Gaps
In his closing remarks, the Director of Aviation Security Regulations, Dr. Ben Omogo, described the initiative as both a compliance obligation and a strategic intervention.
According to him, aviation remains one of the most sensitive and vulnerable sectors globally, making insider threats a significant area of concern.
“Individuals within organisations who misuse authorised access to compromise security represent a growing global trend. This training is not only in response to audit findings but also a regulatory requirement for all personnel with access to strategic and restricted airport areas,” he explained.
Dr. Omogo added that the programme is designed to strengthen internal vigilance and equip personnel with the knowledge required to identify suspicious activities before they escalate into security breaches.
Expected Impact on Nigeria’s Aviation Sector
The Aviation Security Awareness Training is expected to deliver measurable outcomes, including:
Improved regulatory compliance
Enhanced threat identification and risk assessment skills
Reduction in security breaches
Stronger emergency preparedness capabilities
Increased public trust in aviation safety systems
Institutionalisation of ICAO’s security culture framework introduced in 2020
Industry analysts say the initiative comes at a crucial time when global aviation authorities are intensifying scrutiny on insider vulnerabilities and regulatory compliance standards.
By launching the inaugural batch of the programme, the NCAA signals its determination to adopt a proactive, intelligence-driven approach to aviation security — one that prioritises prevention, resilience, and sustained alignment with international best practices.
As Nigeria’s aviation sector continues to expand, initiatives such as this are expected to play a pivotal role in safeguarding infrastructure, passengers, and national airspace from emerging security risks.
