President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed respected fiscal policy expert, Taiwo Oyedele, as the new Minister of State for Finance, in a strategic cabinet reshuffle designed to deepen Nigeria’s ongoing fiscal and tax reforms.
The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed that the outgoing Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, has been redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning as Minister of State — her third assignment within the Tinubu administration.
Senate Confirmation Underway
According to the official statement, President Tinubu has formally transmitted Oyedele’s nomination to the Senate for confirmation in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
If confirmed, Oyedele will assume a pivotal role at a time when Nigeria is implementing sweeping fiscal adjustments, revenue reforms, and broader economic restructuring initiatives aimed at stabilising public finances and strengthening investor confidence.
Architect of Nigeria’s Tax Reforms
Oyedele, 50, is widely recognised as the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he led the overhaul of Nigeria’s tax system. Under his leadership, the committee developed frameworks to simplify tax administration, harmonise levies, expand the tax base, and improve revenue efficiency — reforms considered central to the administration’s economic recovery strategy.
An economist, accountant and public policy specialist, Oyedele hails from Ikaram in Akoko, Ondo State. His academic journey began at Yaba College of Technology, where he earned a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance. He later obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.
He also completed executive education programmes at globally renowned institutions, including the London School of Economics, Yale University, the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and the Harvard Kennedy School.
22 Years at PwC
Before his ministerial nomination, Oyedele built a distinguished 22-year career at PwC, where he joined in 2001 and rose to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader. In that capacity, he advised governments, multinational corporations, and development institutions on tax policy design, fiscal sustainability strategies, and regulatory reforms across the continent.
Beyond corporate leadership, Oyedele has remained active in academia. He serves as a professor at Babcock University in Ogun State and is a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School, contributing to policy research and public finance scholarship.
Strategic Economic Repositioning
The appointment is viewed as part of President Tinubu’s broader effort to consolidate fiscal discipline, strengthen revenue mobilisation, and modernise Nigeria’s tax administration framework. With mounting pressure on government finances and the need to reduce reliance on borrowing, experts say Oyedele’s technical expertise could prove critical in driving reforms that enhance transparency, efficiency, and sustainable growth.
Meanwhile, Uzoka-Anite’s redeployment to Budget and National Planning signals continuity within the economic team, as the administration recalibrates its policy direction amid ongoing macroeconomic adjustments.
As the Senate prepares to deliberate on the nomination, stakeholders across the financial and business communities will be watching closely to see how the new appointment shapes Nigeria’s fiscal trajectory in the months ahead.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appoints fiscal policy expert Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance and redeploys Doris Uzoka-Anite to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning, in a strategic cabinet reshuffle focused on fiscal reforms.
