Ethiopian Airlines has commemorated its 80th anniversary with a landmark celebration in Lagos, Nigeria, reflecting on eight decades of growth from a modest post-war operation into one of the world’s most influential and award-winning aviation groups.
The event brought together industry stakeholders, partners, and members of the media to celebrate the airline’s journey, which began on April 8, 1946, with a single flight from Addis Ababa to Cairo operated with a Douglas C-47 aircraft. That historic flight, according to the airline, marked the beginning of a bold vision to connect Africa to the world through reliable and world-class air transport.
Speaking at the ceremony, the General Manager of Ethiopian Airlines Nigeria, Mrs Firihiewot Mekonnen, described the anniversary as both a moment of reflection and renewed commitment to future growth.
“It is truly a great honour and heartfelt pleasure to stand before you today as we celebrate the 80th anniversary of Ethiopian Airlines,” she said, while expressing gratitude to passengers, partners, and the media for their continued support over the years.
From its humble beginnings with just five aircraft and a single international route, the airline has grown into a global aviation giant with a modern fleet of over 140 aircraft and an extensive network covering 144 destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.
Today, the airline operates as the Ethiopian Airlines Group, a fully integrated aviation ecosystem that extends beyond passenger transport to include cargo operations, ground handling services, aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), aviation training through its academy, in-flight catering, airport services, and hospitality through the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel.
Mrs Mekonnen noted that the airline’s evolution over the past eight decades reflects resilience, discipline, and a strong commitment to excellence. She added that the carrier remains focused on innovation, sustainability, and enhancing customer experience in response to the rapidly changing global aviation landscape.
“We are 80 years young,” she said, emphasising that the airline’s pioneering spirit remains as strong today as it was in 1946.
A key highlight of the celebration was the airline’s long-standing relationship with Nigeria, where it began operations in 1960, just one month after Nigeria’s independence. Over the past 65 years, Lagos has remained a critical hub in the airline’s West African operations, serving as a gateway for trade, tourism, and connectivity.
Mrs Mekonnen described Nigeria as more than a destination, calling it a strategic partner in the airline’s growth journey. She praised the trust and loyalty of Nigerian passengers and reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to strengthening its operations in the country.
“Nigeria is not just a destination in our network; it is a valued partner in our journey, rich in culture, energy, and opportunity,” she said.
The anniversary celebration in Lagos also underscored Ethiopian Airlines’ broader role in strengthening African connectivity and global aviation links, connecting major cities such as Addis Ababa with key commercial hubs like Lagos.
Looking ahead, the airline reaffirmed its commitment to continued expansion, fleet modernisation, digital transformation, and sustainable aviation practices aimed at reducing environmental impact while improving operational efficiency.
As the celebration drew to a close, Mrs Mekonnen paid tribute to employees, management, partners, and loyal customers whose contributions, she said, have been central to the airline’s enduring success.
“Here’s to 80 years of excellence and many more years of shared success ahead,” she concluded.
The event ended on a forward-looking note, with Ethiopian Airlines reiterating its ambition to remain a leading force in global aviation and a key driver of Africa’s connectivity to the world.
