Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) Plc has strengthened its leadership position in Nigeria’s aviation sector following its designation as the exclusive ground handling service provider at the newly commissioned Gateway International Airport, Iperu, Ogun State.
The airport, inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represents a major milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to expand aviation infrastructure and unlock regional economic potential. With its modern facilities and strategic location, the Gateway Airport is expected to serve as a critical hub for both passenger movement and cargo logistics in the South-West and beyond.
SAHCO’s appointment as the sole ground handler at the facility highlights the company’s industry credibility, built on decades of operational excellence, strict adherence to global safety standards, and consistent delivery of efficient aviation services.
Speaking on the development, SAHCO’s Chairman, Taiwo Afolabi, described the milestone as both a validation of the company’s competence and a strategic opportunity to deepen its contribution to Nigeria’s aviation growth story.
He noted that SAHCO remains committed to supporting the sector through sustained investments in modern ground handling equipment, advanced technology, and continuous training of its workforce. According to him, the company’s readiness to manage operations at the Ogun airport further demonstrates its capacity to handle increasing traffic across both new and established airports nationwide.
A key highlight of SAHCO’s operational strategy at the airport is its collaboration with Allied Air, a leading Nigerian cargo carrier. The partnership is expected to drive efficient cargo handling processes, leveraging a modern warehouse complex designed for seamless import and export operations.
Industry analysts note that this development could significantly boost the movement of time-sensitive and high-value goods, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and e-commerce—areas critical to Nigeria’s diversification agenda.
During the commissioning ceremony, SAHCO played a central operational role, delivering a comprehensive suite of services including ramp handling, passenger facilitation, cargo processing, and overall logistics coordination. The company’s performance ensured a seamless execution of the high-profile event.
In a statement, Head of Corporate Communications, Mrs Adetola Vanessa Uansohia, emphasised that the Gateway International Airport is set to transform regional connectivity and stimulate economic activities across Ogun State and neighbouring regions. She added that the presence of a reliable ground handling partner like SAHCO from inception positions the airport for efficient, safe, and world-class operations.
The commissioning of the airport is widely seen as a catalyst for increased trade, investment inflows, and job creation, aligning with the Federal Government’s broader agenda to modernise infrastructure and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in global aviation.
As the aviation industry continues to evolve, SAHCO’s expanding footprint across key airports underscores its pivotal role in shaping a more efficient and resilient air transport ecosystem in Nigeria.
