The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has joined industry stakeholders in celebrating renowned entrepreneur and aviation investor, Kunle Soname, on his 60th birthday, describing him as a transformative figure whose investments have reshaped Nigeria’s private air travel landscape.
In a statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr Henry Agbebire, FAAN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Olubunmi Kuku, commended Soname’s enduring contributions to aviation, noting that his entry into the sector came at a critical time when indigenous capacity development was gaining urgency.
Kuku highlighted Soname’s establishment of ValueJet as a defining moment in Nigeria’s aviation evolution, emphasising that the airline has consistently demonstrated high standards in safety, operational efficiency, and customer-focused service delivery.
She described Soname as a bold investor who ventured into a highly capital-intensive and risk-prone industry with clarity of vision and long-term commitment.
“Kunle Soname represents the very essence of Nigerian enterprise—resilient, forward-thinking, and impact-driven. His footprint in aviation, particularly through ValueJet, has contributed significantly to improving service standards and strengthening confidence in indigenous airlines,” Kuku stated.
Driving Indigenous Airline Growth
Industry observers note that Soname’s involvement in aviation goes beyond business expansion, reflecting a broader commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s domestic airline ecosystem. At a time when the sector faces challenges ranging from high operating costs to infrastructure gaps, his investments have helped sustain competition, create jobs, and expand connectivity within the country.
FAAN acknowledged that partnerships with private operators like ValueJet remain critical to achieving its mandate of delivering world-class airport services and enhancing passenger experience nationwide.
Kuku reaffirmed FAAN’s commitment to supporting local airlines through infrastructure upgrades, improved operational systems, and policies aimed at easing passenger movement across Nigerian airports.
Impact Beyond Aviation
Beyond the aviation sector, FAAN also applauded Soname’s significant contributions to sports development, particularly football. His investments have played a vital role in nurturing young Nigerian talents and providing platforms for international exposure.
His efforts in sports administration and club ownership have not only elevated the profile of Nigerian football but have also contributed to youth empowerment and talent development—an area widely regarded as critical to national growth.
A Legacy of Vision and Enterprise
As Soname marks his 60th birthday, FAAN described the milestone as a celebration of a life defined by vision, enterprise, and national impact. The authority noted that his achievements continue to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs willing to explore opportunities in challenging sectors.
“As you celebrate this remarkable milestone, we wish you continued strength, wisdom, and good health. Your legacy stands as a testament to what is possible through determination and visionary leadership,” Kuku added.
FAAN concluded by describing Soname as a distinguished patriot and industry icon whose contributions have left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s aviation and sports landscapes.
