United Nigeria Airlines Chairman to Deliver ABUAD Convocation Lecture, Get Honorary Degree

The Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, has been named the Convocation Lecturer for the 14th Convocation Ceremony of Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), where he will also be conferred with an honorary doctorate degree in recognition of his contributions to enterprise and humanity.

The prestigious event, scheduled for October 2026, will see Prof. Okonkwo deliver the convocation lecture on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the Alfa Belgore Multipurpose Hall on the ABUAD campus. The honorary degree conferment will take place during the grand finale of the ceremonies on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

Three Nigerians to Receive Honorary Degrees

According to a letter signed by the Chancellor of ABUAD, Chief Afe Babalola, Prof. Okonkwo will be among three distinguished Nigerians selected for honorary awards this year, in recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to humanity and national development.

The university emphasized that the honourees were carefully selected based on their professional achievements, leadership impact, and service to society.

ABUAD’s Vision for Quality Education

In his invitation letter, Chief Afe Babalola noted that Prof. Okonkwo’s achievements and professional pedigree made him a fitting choice for the convocation lecture.

He further highlighted ABUAD’s commitment over the past 16 years to reshaping Nigeria’s education landscape through quality-driven and functional learning, positioning the institution as a model for academic excellence and innovation.

According to him, the convocation lecture is also intended to foster dialogue on national development and create opportunities for collaboration between academia and industry leaders.

Okonkwo Expresses Gratitude

Reacting to the invitation, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo expressed deep appreciation for the honour, describing it as both humbling and inspiring. He commended Chief Afe Babalola’s leadership and vision in building a world-class institution in Nigeria.

He said:

“It is my absolute delight to accept both proposed designations as Convocation Lecturer and as a recipient of the university’s honorary degree. I consider it an honour to join the eminent cast of statesmen and technocrats featured over the years in these prestigious ceremonies to advance conversations on a better society. He further reaffirmed his commitment to participating in the ceremony and contributing to intellectual discourse aimed at national development.
