The Area Controller of the Tincan Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Comptroller JA Anani, has declared the media a strategic partner in the Command’s drive for enhanced transparency, trade facilitation, compliance enforcement and revenue generation, pledging an era of open engagement and stronger collaboration with journalists covering the maritime sector.
Speaking during his maiden engagement with members of the press on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the Command headquarters, Comptroller Anani said the meeting marked the beginning of a deliberate effort to strengthen understanding, trust and cooperation between Customs and the media as critical stakeholders in Nigeria’s maritime industry.
According to him, since assuming office, stakeholder engagement has remained a top priority, with the media occupying a central role in shaping public understanding of Customs operations and promoting compliance within the port ecosystem.
“The press is not merely a communication channel but a strategic partner in our operations. Your reportage influences public perception, promotes accountability and contributes significantly to the effectiveness of our mandate,” he stated.
Media to Be Fully Integrated into Customs Activities
The Customs boss assured journalists that under his administration, the media would be fully carried along in the Command’s policies, operational activities, reforms and achievements through timely, accurate and transparent dissemination of information.
He emphasized that effective communication remains essential for building confidence among stakeholders and ensuring that the public is adequately informed about Customs activities.
As part of efforts to deepen engagement, Comptroller Anani announced plans to support journalists through regular training programmes, sensitization workshops and capacity-building initiatives designed to improve understanding of Customs operations and emerging developments in the maritime sector.
He noted that a knowledgeable and well-equipped press corps would contribute significantly to quality reporting, enhance public enlightenment and strengthen institutional understanding of the challenges and achievements of the Nigeria Customs Service.
Call for Responsible and Professional Journalism
While reaffirming the Command’s commitment to transparency, the Area Controller urged journalists to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct in reporting Customs activities.
He stressed that responsible journalism is critical to preserving public trust, combating misinformation and ensuring that national economic objectives are not undermined by inaccurate or misleading reports.
According to him, factual and balanced reportage remains indispensable to sustaining confidence in government institutions and fostering constructive stakeholder relationships.
Technology-Driven Customs Operations
Highlighting his administration’s strategic priorities, Comptroller Anani disclosed that the Tincan Island Port Command would continue to leverage the ongoing modernization programme of the Nigeria Customs Service to improve operational efficiency and facilitate legitimate trade.
He explained that technology-driven solutions, improved processes and stronger systems would remain key instruments for enhancing service delivery, reducing bottlenecks and supporting Nigeria’s trade competitiveness.
The Command, he said, is fully aligned with the broader reform agenda of the Nigeria Customs Service aimed at creating a modern, efficient and globally competitive customs administration.
Compliance Remains Non-Negotiable
The Area Controller reiterated that strict adherence to the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 would remain a cornerstone of his administration.
He emphasized that compliance with all applicable laws and regulations would continue to guide the Command’s operations, adding that enforcement activities would be carried out firmly, fairly and professionally.
“Compliance is at the heart of our operations. We shall continue to enforce the law without compromise while ensuring professionalism and fairness in all our engagements,” he said.
Revenue Performance on Positive Trajectory
Comptroller Anani also revealed that the Command is currently recording impressive performance in revenue collection, attributing the positive trend to increased compliance by stakeholders, enhanced operational efficiency and the commitment of Customs officers.
He expressed confidence that the Command would consolidate on existing gains and surpass previous achievements recorded under the preceding administration.
Industry observers note that Tincan Island Port remains one of Nigeria’s most strategic revenue-generating commands, making its performance critical to the Federal Government’s fiscal objectives.
Commends CGC Adeniyi’s Reform Leadership
The Customs chief used the opportunity to express appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, for entrusting him with the leadership of the Command.
He praised the CGC’s transformational leadership and commitment to repositioning the Nigeria Customs Service through reforms focused on efficiency, innovation and global best practices.
According to him, the support and vision of the Comptroller-General have continued to drive significant improvements across Customs formations nationwide.
Public Relations Unit to Strengthen Media Interface
In a move aimed at institutionalizing media relations, Comptroller Anani announced that the Public Relations Unit of the Command would be specifically tasked with ensuring prompt attention to all media-related matters.
The Unit, he explained, would maintain continuous engagement with journalists, facilitate access to relevant information and developments, and serve as a bridge between the Command and the media.
He stressed that a strong partnership with the press remains essential to achieving the Command’s objectives and ensuring that stakeholders and the public remain adequately informed.
Driving National Growth Through Collaboration
Closing his remarks, Comptroller Anani reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to openness, collaboration and constructive engagement with all stakeholders.
He expressed optimism that stronger cooperation between Customs, the media and industry operators would further enhance trade facilitation, boost revenue generation and support Nigeria’s broader economic growth objectives.
“Our Command remains open and collaborative. Together with the media and other stakeholders, we will continue to strengthen trade facilitation, improve compliance and contribute meaningfully to national development,” he concluded.
