President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure-led economic development with the official flag-off of two strategic road projects in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), describing the investments as critical to improving mobility, stimulating economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
Represented by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, at the twin groundbreaking ceremonies on Tuesday, the President said the projects reflect the practical implementation of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and its determination to build modern infrastructure capable of supporting Nigeria’s long-term development.
The projects include the construction of the two Service Carriageways of the Southern Parkway from Arterial Road S20 to Ring Road II in Gaduwa District, as well as the construction of Collector Road CO1 within the Institution and Research District stretching from the Nile University axis to Ring Road III.
Southern Parkway to Ease Traffic Gridlock
Speaking at the Southern Parkway ceremony, President Tinubu described the road as one of Abuja’s most strategic transportation corridors, linking several districts across Phases I to IV of the Federal Capital City.
He noted that although the main carriageway—named Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way—has already been completed and commissioned, the construction of the accompanying service carriageways will complete the original road design while addressing persistent traffic congestion affecting thousands of commuters.
According to the President, residents of Durumi, Gudu, Gaduwa, Duboyi and surrounding communities stand to benefit significantly from improved traffic flow, reduced travel time and lower transportation costs.
“When completed, these service carriageways will reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, shorten travel time, lower transportation costs for businesses, and improve the quality of life for residents. This is the dividend of democracy. This is Renewed Hope in action,” the President said.
New Road to Support Knowledge Economy
At the second ceremony in the Institution and Research District, President Tinubu described the Collector Road CO1 project as a strategic investment designed to unlock the economic potential of Abuja’s education and innovation corridor.
He explained that the road would provide seamless connectivity among universities, research centres, legal institutions and innovation hubs, thereby strengthening Abuja’s position as a centre for knowledge-driven economic activities.
“The Institution and Research District was conceived as the intellectual heart of Abuja. However, ideas cannot move if roads do not move. This project will provide critical access, reduce travel time, improve connectivity and support the growth of a knowledge-driven economy,” the President stated.
The President added that the road complements the already completed corridor connecting the Body of Benchers Complex, Nile University and Baze University, which is expected to be commissioned as part of activities marking the administration’s third anniversary.
Infrastructure Expansion Continues Across FCT
President Tinubu said the two projects form part of a broader infrastructure renewal programme currently reshaping Abuja through strategic investments in transportation.
He listed completed and ongoing projects including the N20 Corridor, the N16 Interchange linking Jahi and Gwarimpa, and several road networks in Kuje, Gwagwalada and Mabushi.
According to him, the administration remains committed to completing inherited projects while initiating new ones capable of delivering sustainable economic and social benefits nationwide.
Tinubu Commends Wike’s Performance
The President praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for what he described as exceptional leadership and effective project execution.
He said Wike’s stewardship has transformed Abuja into one of the country’s largest construction sites while accelerating development across both the city centre and satellite towns.
“Minister Wike has demonstrated that effective leadership is measured by results. Through determination, discipline and vision, he has revived abandoned projects, accelerated development across districts and satellite towns, and translated the Renewed Hope Agenda into visible progress for residents of the FCT,” the President said.
Tinubu also commended the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, alongside officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) for maintaining quality supervision and ensuring effective project implementation.
Contractors Charged on Quality Delivery
The President urged contractors handling the projects to adhere strictly to project timelines, maintain high construction standards, employ Nigerian youths and artisans, and facilitate skills transfer throughout the construction period.
He also appealed to residents to cooperate with contractors and traffic management officials, acknowledging that temporary inconveniences during construction would ultimately translate into lasting economic and social benefits.
Optimism Despite Economic Challenges
Reaffirming confidence in Nigeria’s future, President Tinubu maintained that despite the short-term challenges associated with ongoing economic reforms, the administration remains focused on laying a solid foundation for sustained prosperity.
“Three years into this administration, the results are becoming increasingly visible. From transportation infrastructure to housing, education and economic reforms, we are building the foundations of a nation that works for all Nigerians. The best days of Abuja and indeed Nigeria remain ahead,” he said.
The statement, endorsed by Abimbola Tooki, Special Adviser to the APC National Chairman on Media and Information Strategy, noted that both projects are expected to significantly improve urban mobility, strengthen connectivity, stimulate commercial activities and advance the Federal Capital Territory’s long-term development objectives.
The Ameh News Explains:
The Southern Parkway service carriageways are expected to decongest one of Abuja’s busiest transport corridors, while the Collector Road CO1 is designed to improve access to the capital’s education and research institutions. Together, the projects align with the Federal Government’s strategy of using infrastructure investment to drive economic productivity, urban expansion and private sector growth.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration has, over the past three years, intensified road construction and rehabilitation across Abuja under the Renewed Hope Agenda. The latest projects add to several strategic transport corridors intended to reduce congestion, improve connectivity and support the capital city’s expanding population and commercial activities.
What’s Next?
Construction work is expected to commence immediately, with the Federal Government pledging close monitoring to ensure timely completion, quality execution and maximum economic impact. Upon completion, both roads are expected to enhance transportation efficiency, boost investment opportunities and support Abuja’s long-term urban development strategy.
