United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has reinforced its commitment to diversity, inclusion and youth empowerment by supporting a talent competition for visually impaired young Nigerians, with the winner receiving a ₦100,000 cash prize.
The airline co-sponsored the blind segment of the Henrotion in Expression talent showcase held in Port Harcourt on Sunday, providing a platform for visually impaired singers to display their talents before an appreciative audience.
At the end of the keenly contested event, Sarima Owhur, popularly known as Sari Wonder, emerged the overall winner after delivering an outstanding vocal performance that earned her the top prize of ₦100,000.
The first runner-up, Kelly Zion, also received a financial reward after popular comedian Funny Bone, who attended the event, announced an additional ₦100,000 cash gift in recognition of the contestant’s remarkable performance.
The competition featured several visually impaired young Nigerians and was designed to celebrate ability over disability by giving participants an opportunity to showcase their musical talents and inspire others.
Championing Inclusion Through Corporate Support
Speaking after receiving her award, an emotional Sari Wonder expressed appreciation to United Nigeria Airlines for believing in the dreams of persons living with disabilities.
“I want to say thank you, United Nigeria Airlines. I don’t know what to say; all I can say is thank you very much,” she said.
The Founder of Vision Rehab Centre and Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr. Adedayo Adio, commended the winner, who is one of the centre’s beneficiaries, while calling for increased support for rehabilitation programmes serving visually impaired persons.
According to him, privately owned rehabilitation centres require significant funding to provide education, vocational training and life skills for beneficiaries, particularly those whose families cannot afford such opportunities.
He explained that the centre not only trains visually impaired persons in various skills to become self-reliant but also operates a low-vision programme that equips eye care professionals with specialised knowledge to improve rehabilitation services.
United Nigeria Airlines Reaffirms Commitment
Presenting the award on behalf of the airline, the Port Harcourt Station Manager of United Nigeria Airlines, Uche Magbo, praised all the contestants for their determination, resilience and exceptional performances.
He said the airline remains committed to creating opportunities for talented Nigerians regardless of physical limitations.
“At United Nigeria Airlines, we believe true inclusion means giving a voice and a platform to those who are too often overlooked. We watched young people living with disabilities prove that talent has no limits and that vision is not a requirement for greatness.
“That is why we are proud to support initiatives like this. We will continue to encourage young, talented and hardworking Nigerians who are determined to rise above their circumstances. Congratulations to Sari Wonder, Kelly Zion and every contestant. You have inspired us all. United Nigeria Airlines will continue to fly the flag of inclusion, encouragement and opportunity for people living with disabilities across Nigeria.”
Organisers Laud Airline’s Partnership
Founder of Henrotion, Henry Aniakor, thanked United Nigeria Airlines for partnering with the organisers, describing the airline’s support as instrumental to the success of the event.
According to him, the partnership helped create an unforgettable experience that combined creativity, entertainment, excellence and social impact while giving visually impaired young Nigerians the recognition they deserve.
He expressed optimism that the collaboration would continue to grow in the years ahead.
