The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has firmly debunked a circulating fake report claiming that the tenure of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, has been extended by the Presidency.
In an official statement released by the NCS, the Service described the purported announcement—allegedly originating from the State House—as false and misleading. The NCS clarified that any appointment or tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of Customs is exclusively at the discretion of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, in accordance with the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, and relevant public service guidelines.
“As of now, no such directive regarding an extension has been communicated to the Nigeria Customs Service by the appropriate authorities,” the statement read.
Speaking on behalf of the Comptroller-General, the National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to its statutory responsibilities, which include trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.
He emphasized that under the leadership of CGC Adeniyi, the NCS continues to implement far-reaching reforms geared toward modernizing customs operations, fostering inter-agency cooperation, and supporting national economic development.
The Service also urged the general public and all stakeholders to rely solely on official communication channels for authentic information about appointments or administrative decisions. Any updates on such matters, it said, will be formally released through appropriate government platforms.
The NCS expressed appreciation for the public’s ongoing support and restated its dedication to professionalism, transparency, and unwavering service to the nation.
