The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has applauded the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its strategic support in enabling the federal government to meet its 2025 revenue target.

The commendation was delivered by FIRS Executive Chairman, Mr. Zach Adedeji, during a courtesy visit to EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Reflecting on the achievement, Adedeji said the milestone was not solely FIRS’s success but the result of strong institutional collaboration.

“If you listened to Mr. President last week, we were being praised to high heavens for meeting our revenue target. But it is wrong to assume that we alone did the job. This visit is to extend Mr. President’s appreciation to our partners, particularly the EFCC, for the critical role you played in achieving this feat and sustaining Nigeria’s financial stability,” Adedeji stated.

He emphasized the need for continued cooperation, noting that transparent use of collected revenues and reforms in expenditure frameworks would be central to driving voluntary tax compliance.

“As we prepare for another budget cycle, our focus is on reforming the expenditure framework to enhance transparency. We are here to seek your partnership in ensuring taxpayers see value for their money. This will encourage compliance and strengthen our revenue base,” he added.

Adedeji further highlighted the unprecedented fiscal impact of the achievement, stating that sub-national governments have witnessed record allocations from the Federation Account.

In his response, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede congratulated FIRS on what he described as an “unprecedented accomplishment.”

“I’m not sure there has ever been a time in our history when Nigeria met its revenue target by August. This is no small feat, and it underscores the importance of collaboration. When the public sees EFCC working alongside FIRS, it sends a clear message that it can’t be business as usual,” Olukoyede said.

He reaffirmed the EFCC’s legal mandate to investigate and prosecute tax-related financial crimes, referencing a recent Court of Appeal judgment that validated the Commission’s jurisdiction in tackling tax fraud.

“Tax and revenue issues fall within the scope of financial crimes. The Court of Appeal has affirmed our powers, and we will continue to work closely with FIRS to safeguard national resources,” he declared.

Olukoyede also emphasized the importance of financial discipline, accountability, and value-for-money spending, assuring that the EFCC remains fully committed to strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal integrity. He welcomed the newly passed Revenue Act, set to take effect on January 1, 2026, noting that it would further boost economic growth.

“Our joint responsibility is to ensure that revenues are properly utilized. Synergy is key, and I assure you that the EFCC will continue to collaborate with FIRS anytime, any day,” Olukoyede concluded.

The courtesy visit highlighted the growing inter-agency synergy between the FIRS and EFCC as both institutions move to deepen reforms, enhance revenue mobilization, and promote transparency in public finance management.
