In a historic bid to etch Nigeria’s name in the global hall of fame, the School of Eloquence, West Africa’s foremost institution for public speaking and communication excellence, is gearing up to make history with an ambitious attempt at the Guinness World Record for the Longest Speech Marathon (Team).
The event, officially approved by Guinness World Records (Ref: 250922121700lsm), is titled “20 Days of Eloquence — The World’s Longest Speaking Relay.” It is set to kick off on January 12, 2026, at the prestigious Oriental Hotel in Lagos, where hundreds of Nigerians — from leaders to students, professionals to creatives — will take turns speaking continuously for 20 days, amounting to 480 hours of nonstop speeches.
The initiative coincides with the 20th anniversary of the School of Eloquence, founded in 2006 by Ubong Essien, CSP, who remains the only Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) in West Africa and serves as the Dean of the institution.
A Celebration of Two Decades of Impact
For two decades, the School of Eloquence has empowered Nigerians with the ability to communicate with clarity, confidence, and conviction. Now, as it turns 20, the institution is inviting the nation to “speak with one voice” in what promises to be a transformative national experience.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the event, Ubong Essien described it as a symbolic milestone in the school’s legacy and a rallying call for a new culture of confident expression among Nigerians.
“For 20 years, the School of Eloquence has taught Nigerians to speak with courage, confidence, and clarity. Now, as we turn 20, we are giving the nation an opportunity to speak — continuously — for 20 days. This is not just a record attempt; it’s a national quest for eloquence, unity, and expression. For 20 days, Nigeria will speak as one voice — passing on the mic from one speaker to the next,” Essien said.
‘Pass on the Mic’: A National Festival of Voices
Themed “Pass on the Mic,” the 20 Days of Eloquence project is designed as more than a Guinness World Record attempt. It is envisioned as a national festival of ideas, intellect, and inspiration — a relay of voices showcasing Nigeria’s resilience, diversity, and talent through the spoken word.
Speakers will include public officials, business leaders, educators, students, content creators, and everyday Nigerians, each contributing to an ongoing dialogue of hope, leadership, and national progress.
The event will be monitored by Guinness World Records adjudicators, independent witnesses, and official timekeepers, in strict compliance with the GWR’s global standards. The current record, held by Toastmasters District 112 (New Zealand), stands at 127 hours, 31 minutes, and 43 seconds, a milestone the Nigerian team aims to surpass by a remarkable margin.
A Legacy Project for National Unity
Beyond the pursuit of a world record, the 20 Days of Eloquence initiative seeks to ignite a national conversation around communication, leadership, and identity. It will serve as a legacy project that brings together Nigerians from all walks of life, encouraging them to speak up, share stories, and celebrate the power of eloquence as a tool for national cohesion.
“This is more than a speaking relay — it’s a unifying experience,” said Essien. “In these 20 days, we want to remind Nigerians that our voices matter, that our words can heal, inspire, and transform our collective destiny.”
The event will also spotlight the School of Eloquence’s contributions to leadership and communication development in Nigeria and across Africa, reinforcing its reputation as the continent’s leading institution for speech and presentation mastery.
Invitation for Partners and Sponsors
The School of Eloquence has opened sponsorship and partnership opportunities for individuals, corporate organizations, and state institutions eager to support the event. Partners will not only align with a globally recognized record-breaking initiative but also gain visibility in one of Africa’s most inspiring platforms for youth engagement, thought leadership, and social unity.
Interested participants and supporters can register or learn more via the official “20 Days of Eloquence” campaign portal, which will soon be unveiled alongside a nationwide media tour.
As the countdown begins to January 12, 2026, all eyes will be on Lagos — where Nigeria prepares to speak to the world. For 20 days, the nation will take turns holding the mic, redefining what it means to be eloquent, expressive, and united.
The School of Eloquence, Nigeria’s leading public speaking institution, will attempt a Guinness World Record with “20 Days of Eloquence” — a 480-hour nonstop speaking relay uniting hundreds of Nigerians to celebrate two decades of communication excellence and national unity.
