United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) celebrated a landmark five-year anniversary today, with its Chairman, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, OFR, sharing a reflective journey of achievements, challenges, and the road ahead during a World Press Conference at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.
Addressing stakeholders, media, and aviation enthusiasts, Prof. Okonkwo revisited the airline’s humble beginnings in 2021, noting that UNA emerged with a vision to redefine air travel in Nigeria through operational excellence, customer-focused service, and strategic growth.
“We started with ambition, determination, and a belief that Nigerian aviation could soar to international standards,” Prof. Okonkwo recalled. “Over the past five years, we’ve not only strengthened our domestic routes but also built a reputation for reliability, safety, and innovation in the sector.”
Highlighting key milestones, he disclosed that UNA has consistently grown its fleet and network, while maintaining operational resilience amid economic and global challenges. Looking forward, Prof. Okonkwo announced that UNA is on track to be listed on the Nigeria Exchange (NGX) within the next three years, a move set to deepen investor confidence and catalyze further growth.
“In line with our expansion strategy, more aircraft are expected to join our fleet this year,” he added, emphasizing that strategic investments in modern aircraft and technology remain central to UNA’s growth plans.
Reflecting on lessons learned, Prof. Okonkwo emphasized the importance of adaptive leadership, stakeholder collaboration, and unwavering commitment to excellence. “Our journey has taught us that success is built not only on ambition but on disciplined execution, innovation, and trust from our passengers and partners,” he said.
The anniversary also served as a moment of gratitude, acknowledging the contributions of UNA’s management team, employees, and partners in achieving the airline’s milestones. With the upcoming NSE listing and fleet expansion, UNA is poised to chart a new era of growth and set benchmarks for the Nigerian aviation industry.
