United Nigeria Airlines has temporarily withdrawn one of its CRJ-900 aircraft from service following a bird strike incident that occurred during landing at Abuja, raising fresh concerns over recurring wildlife hazards in Nigeria’s aviation space.
The affected aircraft was operating Flight UN0579 from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Tuesday evening. The airline disclosed that the incident occurred at approximately 18:15 hours during the aircraft’s descent and landing phase in Abuja.
In an official statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Mr Chibuike Uloka, the airline confirmed that the aircraft had been immediately grounded in line with its stringent safety protocols. It will undergo comprehensive inspections and necessary maintenance checks before being cleared to return to active service.
The airline warned that the development could disrupt parts of its flight schedule, as operational adjustments are made to accommodate the temporary removal of the aircraft from its fleet. Passengers are advised to monitor updates and stay in touch with the airline for the latest travel information.
While no injuries or major damage have been reported, the airline stressed that such precautionary measures are standard global aviation practice designed to ensure passenger safety at all times.
Industry observers note that bird strikes remain a persistent operational challenge for airlines, particularly during takeoff and landing phases, where aircraft are most vulnerable. In Nigeria, factors such as airport location, environmental conditions, and wildlife activity around airfields contribute to the frequency of such incidents.
This latest occurrence marks the fifth bird strike involving United Nigeria Airlines aircraft since January 2026. Despite the recurrence, the airline reassured stakeholders that all incidents have been handled in strict compliance with aviation safety regulations and established operational procedures.
The airline reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational reliability, adding that it will continue to deploy proactive measures to mitigate risks and improve service delivery across its network.
United Nigeria Airlines also expressed appreciation to its passengers for their patience and understanding, while apologising for any inconvenience caused by the unforeseen disruption.
