The Dangote Group has issued a strong rebuttal to what it termed a “false and malicious” publication alleging internal and external controversies involving its President, Aliko Dangote, including claims of a strained relationship with Tony Elumelu and questionable financing of its multi-billion-dollar refinery project.

In a statement signed by its Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina, the company said the report misrepresented facts and attributed statements to Dangote and the organisation that were never made.

The Group categorically denied claims that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery—widely regarded as one of Africa’s largest industrial projects—was funded through personal loans from friends or informal financial arrangements. It stressed that such narratives are misleading and undermine the credibility of structured project financing frameworks typically associated with large-scale infrastructure investments.

“As a matter of principle, Aliko Dangote neither finances his projects through personal borrowing from friends nor engages in lending arrangements of that nature,” the statement noted, urging those making such allegations to provide verifiable and credible evidence.

No Rift, Strong Ties Maintained

Addressing the purported rift between Dangote and Elumelu, the Group described the claim as entirely unfounded, reaffirming that both business leaders maintain a cordial and longstanding relationship. Their engagement over the years, the statement implied, reflects mutual respect and shared commitment to Africa’s economic growth and private sector development.

Rising Threat of AI-Driven Misinformation

Beyond the immediate claims, the company expressed concern over what it described as an alarming trend of fabricated content and the unauthorised use of Dangote’s name, image, and likeness in AI-generated advertisements and digital materials.

According to the Group, such practices not only mislead the public but also pose significant reputational and financial risks, especially in an era where digital misinformation can spread rapidly across platforms.

The statement warned that individuals and platforms involved in creating or disseminating false or manipulated content should cease such actions immediately, adding that the company would not hesitate to pursue legal remedies to protect its brand and leadership.

Commitment to Integrity and Economic Development

Reiterating its corporate philosophy, Dangote Group emphasised its commitment to transparency, integrity, and responsible corporate conduct. It noted that its ongoing investments—including the refinery—are part of a broader strategy to deepen industrialisation, enhance energy security, and drive economic self-sufficiency across Nigeria and the African continent.

Industry analysts note that the refinery project remains a critical pillar in Nigeria’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products, conserve foreign exchange, and strengthen local value chains.

The company concluded by urging stakeholders, media organisations, and the public to rely on verified information and official communications when engaging with issues concerning its operations and leadership.
