The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic IBTC Insurance, Mr. Akinjide Orimolade, is set to headline the 2026 edition of the annual SUPERNEWS Nigeria Conference and 10th Anniversary Celebration, a landmark gathering expected to shape conversations around local content development, digitisation, and sustainable growth in Nigeria’s insurance and oil and gas sectors.
The highly anticipated event, scheduled for July 7, 2026, at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, will bring together top industry executives, regulators, policymakers, academics, media professionals, and other critical stakeholders to explore opportunities for deeper collaboration between the insurance and energy sectors.
The conference, now in its fourth edition, is themed “Local Content & Digitisation: Building Synergy Between Oil & Gas and Insurance Sectors for Inclusive Growth.”
In recognition of the significance of the event, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Universal Insurance Plc, Dr. Jeff Duru, has been named Chairman of the conference, while the Group Managing Director/CEO of Royal Exchange Plc, Mrs. Idu Okeahialam, will deliver the keynote address.
Organisers disclosed that Orimolade will join an impressive lineup of speakers expected to provide practical insights into how technology, policy reforms, and innovation can unlock new opportunities for both industries. Other distinguished speakers include the Managing Director/CEO of Guinea Insurance Plc, Mr. Ademola Abidogun; the Managing Director/CEO of Deepshores Energy Limited, Mrs. Nneka Obi; and Professor Olajide Fadun of the Department of Insurance and Actuarial Science, University of Lagos.
The Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, has confirmed his participation as Special Guest of Honour. Also expected at the event is the President of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), Mrs. Ekeoma Ezeibe.
Speaking on the choice of the conference theme, the Publisher of SUPERNEWS Nigeria and Convener of the conference, Ngozi Onyeakusi, said the event was designed to provide a strategic platform for addressing the challenges and opportunities surrounding the implementation of local content provisions within Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
According to her, the conference seeks to advance discussions on how digitisation can strengthen collaboration between the insurance and oil and gas sectors while supporting compliance with Sections 49 and 50 of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act.
The provisions require operators in the oil and gas industry to insure all insurable risks associated with their operations through insurance companies and brokers registered in Nigeria. The law further stipulates that any operator seeking to place risks offshore must first obtain written approval from NAICOM after it has been established that local underwriting capacity has been fully exhausted.
To strengthen compliance and address implementation gaps, the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and NAICOM introduced operational guidelines in 2022 aimed at improving adherence to the Act and boosting local participation in risk underwriting.
Industry analysts note that despite the regulatory framework, challenges such as inadequate capitalisation and limited underwriting capacity had constrained the ability of local insurers to fully maximise opportunities within the oil and gas value chain.
However, the emergence of the Nigeria Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 and the ongoing recapitalisation exercise have significantly altered the landscape, positioning Nigerian insurers for stronger competitiveness, enhanced capacity, and greater participation in high-value risks.
Stakeholders believe the conference comes at a critical time when the insurance industry is undergoing transformational reforms and the oil and gas sector is increasingly embracing digital solutions to improve operational efficiency.
With Mr. Akinjide Orimolade and other leading industry figures expected to share insights on innovation, risk management, digital transformation, and local content implementation, the conference is poised to generate practical recommendations capable of accelerating inclusive growth, strengthening indigenous capacity, and fostering long-term partnerships between two of Nigeria’s most strategic sectors.
As Nigeria pursues economic diversification and industrial expansion, the SUPERNEWS Conference is expected to serve as a catalyst for policy dialogue, industry collaboration, and investment opportunities that will help unlock greater value from both the insurance and oil and gas industries. ::::
