The stage is set for one of Nigeria’s most anticipated insurance and energy industry gatherings as stakeholders from across the country’s financial services, oil and gas, regulatory and public sectors converge today at Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, for the 2026 edition of the SUPERNEWS Annual Conference and 10th Anniversary Celebration.
Now in its fourth edition, the conference has established itself as a leading platform for high-level dialogue on issues shaping Nigeria’s insurance landscape and its relationship with other strategic sectors of the economy.
This year’s conference, themed “Local Content & Digitisation: Building Synergy Between Oil & Gas and Insurance Sectors for Inclusive Growth,” comes at a defining moment for Nigeria’s insurance industry following the enactment of the Nigeria Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 and the ongoing recapitalisation programme designed to build stronger and globally competitive insurers.
The event will commence at 10:00 a.m. and is expected to attract regulators, insurance executives, oil and gas operators, government officials, policymakers, academics, brokers, students, civil society organisations and media professionals.
Chairing the conference is the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Universal Insurance Plc, Dr. Jeff Duru, while the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Royal Exchange Plc, Mrs. Idu Okeahialam, will deliver the keynote address.
Adding further prestige to the conference, the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, has confirmed his attendance as Special Guest of Honour.
Also expected is the President of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), Mrs. Ekeoma Ezeibe, alongside several distinguished leaders from Nigeria’s insurance and energy industries.
The conference will feature presentations by the Managing Director/CEO of Stanbic IBTC Insurance, Mr. Akinjide Orimolade; the Managing Director/CEO of Guinea Insurance Plc, Mr. Ademola Abidogun; the Managing Director/CEO of Deepshores Energy Limited, Mrs. Nneka Obi; and Professor Olajide Fadun of the Department of Insurance and Actuarial Science, University of Lagos.
Speaking ahead of today’s conference, Publisher of SUPERNEWS Nigeria and Convener of the event, Ngozi Onyeakusi, said the choice of this year’s theme reflects the urgent need to strengthen collaboration between the insurance and oil and gas industries through digital innovation and effective implementation of Nigeria’s local content policy.
According to her, the conference seeks to generate practical solutions that will improve compliance with Sections 49 and 50 of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act, which require operators in the oil and gas sector to insure risks associated with their operations through Nigerian-registered insurance companies and insurance brokers.
She explained that where risks must be placed offshore, operators are required to obtain prior approval from NAICOM after it has been established that adequate underwriting capacity does not exist within Nigeria.
To strengthen implementation of the law, the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and NAICOM introduced operational guidelines in 2022 aimed at closing identified gaps and improving compliance with the local content provisions.
Industry observers note, however, that implementation has faced significant challenges over the years, including limited underwriting capacity, inadequate capitalisation and technological constraints among some insurers.
The emergence of the Nigeria Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025, together with the industry’s recapitalisation exercise, is expected to transform the sector by creating larger, financially stronger and technologically driven insurance companies capable of underwriting complex oil and gas risks that were previously ceded abroad.
Analysts believe that improving local underwriting capacity could help retain billions of naira in insurance premiums within Nigeria, deepen financial inclusion, create jobs and contribute to economic growth.
Against this backdrop, today’s conference is expected to provide a strategic platform for robust discussions on how digital transformation, regulatory reforms and effective enforcement of local content laws can unlock new opportunities for sustainable partnerships between Nigeria’s insurance and oil and gas industries.
As participants gather at Oriental Hotel, expectations are high that the conference will produce practical recommendations capable of accelerating Nigeria’s local content agenda while positioning the insurance industry as a stronger contributor to national economic development.
Industry leaders, regulators, oil and gas executives, insurers, and policymakers converge at Oriental Hotel, Lagos, today for SUPERNEWS Confab 2026 to explore how local content policies and digital transformation can deepen collaboration between.
