The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a major step toward modernising Nigeria’s aviation industry with the planned rollout of V-Pass, a facial recognition-based biometric identity verification system designed to make domestic air travel faster, safer and more convenient.
Developed in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited, the digital platform will enable passengers to verify their identities through facial recognition technology, significantly reducing dependence on physical identity documents while strengthening airport security.
The initiative forms part of FAAN’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at improving passenger experience, streamlining airport operations and enhancing security across Nigeria’s domestic airports.
FAAN, Verxid Fine-Tune Rollout Strategy
The implementation plan was reviewed during a high-level strategic meeting between FAAN officials and Verxid Technologies Limited, where both organisations examined deployment timelines, security architecture, technical requirements and passenger engagement strategies.
FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms. Adebola, said the project reflects the authority’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve passenger facilitation while reinforcing aviation security.
According to her, V-Pass will provide every traveller with a secure digital identity through a one-time biometric enrolment process.
How the V-Pass System Will Work Under the new system:
Nigerian passengers will enrol using their National Identification Number (NIN) alongside facial biometric capture.
Foreign travellers will register with their international passports using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology and biometric authentication.
Once enrolled, passengers will verify their identities through facial recognition at designated airport checkpoints.
The biometric verification process will occur at two critical stages:
Before passengers enter restricted airport areas.
Before boarding their flights.
FAAN explained that this dual-authentication process is designed to eliminate impersonation, prevent identity fraud and stop unauthorised access to secure airport zones.
Faster Passenger Processing
The authority said passengers will have the option of using self-service biometric kiosks or receiving assistance from trained FAAN personnel during enrolment and verification.
Electronic gates (E-Gates) installed at airport access points will automatically verify passengers and grant entry into controlled areas.
According to project developers:
First-time enrolment will take approximately one minute.
Subsequent facial verification will take less than 30 seconds.
The technology is expected to drastically reduce long queues, improve passenger flow and minimise boarding delays.
Benefits for Airlines and Airport Operations
Beyond passenger verification, V-Pass will provide airlines with secure digital access to:
Flight schedules.
Passenger manifests.
Boarding statistics.
Operational reports.
FAAN will also operate a Central Management System capable of monitoring passenger movement, generating operational analytics and supporting future integration with other airport technologies.
Officials believe the platform will improve airport planning, resource allocation and operational efficiency.
Strong Data Privacy Protection
FAAN stressed that protecting passenger information remains a top priority throughout the project.
The authority confirmed that V-Pass complies fully with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR).
Passenger biometric information will not be stored on self-service kiosks or handheld devices, reducing the risk of unauthorised access or data breaches.
Nationwide Awareness Campaign Before Launch
Before nationwide deployment, FAAN and Verxid Technologies will embark on an extensive public sensitisation campaign.
The awareness programme will include:
Television and radio campaigns.
Social media education.
Airport public announcements.
Airline passenger advisories.
The campaign aims to familiarise travellers with the enrolment process and the benefits of biometric identity verification.
A live Proof-of-Concept demonstration and comprehensive technical site assessment will also be conducted before the system becomes operational nationwide.
