PenCom DG Commissions NUP Legacy House, Kano Governor Donates ₦100 Million

The Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Omolola Oloworaran, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening retirement security and improving the welfare of pensioners as she chaired the commissioning of the Comrade Godwin Abumisi Pensioners’ Legacy House in Abuja.
The landmark event, attended by senior government officials, labour leaders, pension industry stakeholders and retirees, underscored renewed efforts to enhance the dignity and wellbeing of Nigerian pensioners through sustained reforms and institutional support.
The Legacy House was officially commissioned by the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, who announced a ₦100 million donation to support the activities of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), describing retirees as deserving of greater care and recognition for their years of service to the nation.
Legacy House Symbolises Pensioners’ Contributions
Speaking at the ceremony, PenCom Director-General Omolola Oloworaran described the Legacy House as more than just a physical structure, saying it represents the enduring sacrifices, resilience and invaluable contributions of Nigerian pensioners.
She commended the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners for establishing a permanent institution dedicated to protecting retirees’ interests and promoting their welfare.
According to her, the facility reflects the nation’s appreciation for senior citizens and reinforces the need to build stronger institutions that guarantee dignity in retirement.
FG Intensifies Pension Reforms
Oloworaran highlighted several pension reform initiatives being implemented by the Federal Government under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
She noted that the government has made significant progress in settling longstanding pension liabilities, increasing monthly pension payments, improving retirement benefit administration, strengthening compliance with pension regulations, expanding pension coverage and enhancing retirement security for Nigerian workers.
She stressed that PenCom remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure pensioners receive their entitlements promptly while deepening confidence in Nigeria’s contributory pension system.
Kano Governor Reaffirms Support for Pensioners
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said his administration places high priority on the welfare of retirees, describing pensioners as individuals whose years of dedicated service laid the foundation for national development.
He said the ₦100 million donation would assist the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in carrying out programmes aimed at improving the welfare and living conditions of its members.
The governor also pledged continued collaboration with pension stakeholders to ensure retirees enjoy a more secure and dignified life.
Labour Leaders Applaud Initiative
The event featured goodwill messages from the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, and the President of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Comrade Godwin Abumisi.
Abumisi expressed gratitude to Governor Yusuf, PenCom, organised labour and other stakeholders for their unwavering support toward improving the welfare of pensioners.
He described the Legacy House as a historic achievement that will strengthen the union’s capacity to serve retired workers across the country.
