IATA Names Saadia Zahidi First Female Director General, Signals New Era for Global Aviation

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has appointed Saadia Zahidi as its new Director General, making history as the first woman to lead the global airline industry’s foremost trade association since its establishment in 1945.
Zahidi, a seasoned global economist and policy expert, will officially assume office on November 1, 2026, succeeding Willie Walsh, whose tenure ends on July 31, 2026 after steering the association through one of the most turbulent periods in aviation history.
Pending Zahidi’s resumption, Sandrine Le Borgne, IATA’s Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President for Corporate Services, will serve as Interim Director General.
A Historic Leadership Transition
The appointment marks a significant milestone for the aviation industry as IATA prepares to navigate emerging challenges including geopolitical tensions, technological disruption, sustainability demands, digital transformation and evolving global travel patterns.
Announcing the appointment, Roberto Alvo, Chairman of the IATA Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of LATAM Airlines Group, said Zahidi’s wealth of global leadership experience positions her to lead the association into its next phase of growth.
According to him, Zahidi’s appointment comes at a time when the aviation sector is undergoing profound changes that require visionary leadership capable of strengthening collaboration among airlines, governments and international stakeholders.
Alvo also praised outgoing Director General Willie Walsh for successfully guiding IATA through the COVID-19 recovery period, expanding the association’s global membership and reinforcing its role as the unified voice of international aviation.
Zahidi Pledges Innovation, Collaboration and Sustainable Growth
Speaking after her appointment, Zahidi described aviation as one of the world’s most important drivers of economic development, trade, tourism, investment and employment.
She said she was honoured to lead IATA at a pivotal moment for the industry, noting that collaboration would remain essential in ensuring aviation continues connecting people and economies across the globe.
According to her, her immediate priority will be working closely with IATA’s member airlines, governments and industry partners to strengthen innovation, improve resilience, promote global standards and accelerate sustainable aviation growth.
She emphasized that IATA’s role in setting industry standards, providing essential services and advocating for airlines has never been more important amid today’s rapidly changing global environment.
Who is Saadia Zahidi?
Before joining IATA, Zahidi spent more than two decades at the World Economic Forum (WEF), where she served as Managing Director and Member of the Managing Board.
She established and currently leads the WEF’s Centre for the New Economy and Society, overseeing initiatives focused on labour markets, economic transformation, digital innovation and inclusive growth.
Throughout her career, she has also directed the Forum’s Global Communications Group, Global Programming Group and engagement with academic institutions, civil society organisations and international agencies.

Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Smith College;
Master of Philosophy in International Economics from The Graduate Institute; and
Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.
She holds both Swiss and Pakistani citizenship.
