The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has launched a major healthcare support programme for retirees across Nigeria, offering completely free participation for eligible pensioners under its newly introduced Retiree Health Initiative.
According to the commission, no retiree is expected to make any payment to benefit from the programme, as the initiative is fully funded and designed to improve access to healthcare services for pensioners facing rising medical costs and economic hardship.
PenCom disclosed that registration for the programme will operate strictly on a first-come, first-served basis, with only the first 30,000 retirees expected to benefit in the initial phase of the intervention.
The initiative is expected to provide critical health support services aimed at improving the well-being and quality of life of retired workers who have spent decades in public and private sector service.
Industry observers say the programme comes at a crucial time when many Nigerian retirees continue to battle inflation, high healthcare expenses, and inadequate social protection systems.
Analysts also described the move as a significant step toward strengthening pension welfare and restoring confidence in Nigeria’s retirement system, particularly amid growing concerns over elderly healthcare accessibility.
Stakeholders within the pension and healthcare sectors believe the initiative could ease the financial burden on thousands of retirees who often struggle to afford routine medical treatment after leaving active service.
PenCom urged interested retirees to register early due to the limited number of available slots, emphasising that participation remains entirely free and transparent.
The commission further reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare of pensioners and ensuring retirees enjoy healthier and more dignified post-service lives through strategic social intervention programmes.
PenCom launches a free Retiree Health Initiative targeting 30,000 pensioners nationwide, offering healthcare support with no registration payment required.
