Nigeria’s insurance industry is poised for a significant transformation with the introduction of the NAICOM Academy, a strategic initiative of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) aimed at deepening insurance knowledge, strengthening professional capacity, and promoting innovation across the sector.
The academy is designed to serve as a centre of excellence for insurance education, providing accessible training and capacity-building programmes for insurance professionals, regulators, public servants, students, and members of the public. Through the initiative, NAICOM seeks to foster a more informed insurance ecosystem capable of supporting national development and economic resilience.
While the National Insurance Commission has unveiled the NAICOM Academy initiative on its official website, the Commission has yet to announce a formal launch date. The platform is currently listed as “Coming Soon,” signalling that preparations are ongoing for what is expected to become a major centre for insurance education, professional development, regulatory compliance, and industry capacity building in Nigeria.
Addressing Longstanding Industry Challenges
For decades, stakeholders have identified inadequate insurance awareness and limited technical capacity as major factors responsible for the low penetration of insurance services in Nigeria. Despite regulatory reforms and technological advancements, many Nigerians remain unfamiliar with the role of insurance in protecting lives, businesses, and investments.
Industry experts believe the NAICOM Academy could help bridge this knowledge gap by creating structured learning opportunities for operators and consumers alike. The initiative is expected to equip insurance practitioners with modern skills, enhance public understanding of insurance products, and improve overall confidence in the sector.
The academy is also expected to support ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening governance, improving consumer protection, and enhancing operational efficiency across the insurance value chain.
Building a Knowledge-Driven Insurance Sector
Analysts say successful insurance markets around the world have one thing in common: continuous investment in human capital development. Countries with high insurance penetration rates have relied heavily on education, professional certification, research, and innovation to drive industry growth.
According to the report, the NAICOM Academy aligns with this global best practice by creating a platform where insurance professionals can continuously update their knowledge, acquire new competencies, and adapt to evolving market realities. While recent professional profile identified an official serving as Head of the NAICOM Academy from 2026, indicating that administrative structures may already be taking shape. Beyond professional development, the academy is expected to provide specialised training on emerging issues such as digital insurance, risk-based supervision, climate risk management, cybersecurity, financial inclusion, claims administration, and regulatory compliance.
Strengthening Compliance and Public Trust
A major objective of the academy is to improve compliance with insurance laws and regulations through education and awareness.
Industry observers note that many disputes between insurers and policyholders stem from inadequate understanding of policy terms, claims processes, and regulatory obligations. By providing structured education and public enlightenment programmes, the academy could help reduce misunderstandings, improve transparency, and strengthen public trust in insurance institutions.
The initiative also aligns with broader efforts by NAICOM to modernise regulation and improve service delivery through technology-driven solutions.
Economic Impact and National Development
Experts argue that a stronger insurance sector is critical to Nigeria’s economic development. Insurance plays a key role in mobilising long-term capital, protecting investments, supporting entrepreneurship, and mitigating risks across sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, aviation, oil and gas, healthcare, and infrastructure.
As Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy and attract greater investment, industry stakeholders believe a well-trained insurance workforce will be essential to managing emerging risks and supporting sustainable growth.
The academy is therefore expected to contribute not only to industry development but also to broader national objectives, including financial inclusion, job creation, economic resilience, and sustainable development.
Experts Applaud the Initiative
Reacting to the development, economist Celestine Ukpong described the proposed academy as a timely intervention that could reshape the future of insurance in Nigeria.
According to him, “The insurance industry cannot grow beyond the quality of its human capital. The NAICOM Academy represents an investment in knowledge, professionalism, and innovation. It has the potential to strengthen consumer confidence and improve the industry’s contribution to economic growth.”
Similarly, Peter Adebayo, FCA, said the academy could become one of the most impactful reforms in the sector’s recent history.
He noted that many of the challenges confronting insurance adoption in Nigeria are rooted in inadequate awareness and technical capacity. “While the National Insurance Commission has unveiled the NAICOM Academy initiative on its official website, the Commission has yet to announce a formal launch date. The platform is currently listed as ‘Coming Soon,’ signalling that preparations are ongoing for what is expected to become a major centre for insurance education, professional development, regulatory compliance, and industry capacity building in Nigeria.”
“The establishment of a dedicated academy demonstrates a long-term commitment to professional excellence. It will help improve industry standards, strengthen compliance culture, and support the development of a globally competitive insurance market,” he said.
Looking Ahead
As anticipation grows over the official launch of the NAICOM Academy, stakeholders across the insurance industry are optimistic that the initiative will usher in a new era of knowledge-driven growth and innovation.
More than a training institution, the academy is being viewed as a strategic platform for transforming insurance education, developing future industry leaders, and supporting regulatory excellence.
When operational, the NAICOM Academy is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing insurance awareness, enhancing professional competence, promoting transparency, and building a stronger, more resilient insurance sector capable of supporting Nigeria’s long-term economic aspirations.
NAICOM is preparing to launch the NAICOM Academy, a major insurance education and capacity-building initiative aimed at boosting professional development, regulatory compliance, innovation, and public trust in Nigeria’s insurance sector.
