In a renewed drive to boost compliance with compulsory insurance policies and combat the growing menace of fake insurance certificates, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has trained officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, on insurance enforcement, policy verification and public awareness.
The one-day capacity-building programme, held in Abuja, underscored the Commission’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with law enforcement agencies to ensure effective implementation of compulsory insurance laws across the country.
The training, themed “Building a Culture of Insurance Compliance: Police as Catalysts for Protecting Lives, Property and Enhancing Public Safety,” equipped police officers with practical knowledge on Motor Third-Party Insurance, other compulsory insurance policies, insurance verification procedures and the legal framework guiding enforcement.
Representing the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of NAICOM, Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon said the partnership between the Commission and the Police is strategic to improving compliance with compulsory insurance requirements and protecting Nigerians from avoidable financial losses.
According to him, modern public safety extends beyond traditional policing to ensuring that citizens and businesses are financially protected against accidents, disasters and other unforeseen risks through effective insurance coverage.
He described insurance as a critical social and economic safety net that cushions individuals, families, businesses and government institutions against financial shocks, stressing that improved compliance with compulsory insurance laws would strengthen public confidence in both the insurance industry and regulatory institutions.
Gam-Ikon noted that closer collaboration between NAICOM and the Nigeria Police Force would help reduce the number of uninsured vehicles on Nigerian roads, eliminate fake insurance certificates, improve road safety and ensure that accident victims receive the financial protection guaranteed under the law.
He explained that the initiative aligns with the provisions of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025, which seeks to strengthen insurance regulation, increase compliance and expand insurance penetration nationwide.
The NAICOM representative further emphasized that police officers occupy a unique position in driving compliance because of their regular interaction with motorists, transport operators, businesses and the general public.
According to him, by enforcing compulsory insurance laws and educating citizens on the importance of genuine insurance policies, police personnel can significantly reduce financial hardship resulting from accidents while contributing to safer roads and stronger consumer protection.
During the training sessions, participants received hands-on guidance on identifying authentic insurance certificates, verifying insurance policies using approved platforms, understanding the objectives of compulsory insurance, and enforcing relevant legal provisions governing Motor Third-Party Insurance and other mandatory insurance policies.
The programme also served as a platform to deepen institutional cooperation between NAICOM and the Nigeria Police Force, with officers encouraged to become ambassadors of insurance awareness within their commands and communities.
NAICOM reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining collaboration with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to increase public awareness, improve compliance with compulsory insurance policies, discourage insurance fraud and fake certificates, and enhance the contribution of the insurance industry to Nigeria’s economic development and social stability.
The Commission urged officers of the FCT Police Command to champion insurance compliance by promoting a culture where insurance is viewed not merely as a legal obligation but as a critical instrument for safeguarding lives, property, investments and livelihoods.
NAICOM has trained Nigeria Police officers in the FCT on compulsory insurance enforcement, Motor Third-Party Insurance verification and measures to eliminate fake insurance certificates while strengthening public safety.
