The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following an earlier incident that caused concern among passengers and airport users.
In an official update issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, FAAN explained that preliminary investigations showed the smoke seen inside the terminal was caused by the activation of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system, rather than an actual fire.
According to the authority, the automatic discharge of the fire suppression system created the smoke that prompted emergency response measures and temporarily disrupted activities within the terminal.
FAAN said the reason behind the unexpected activation of the FM-200 system is yet to be established and is currently the subject of a comprehensive technical investigation.
The authority assured passengers and stakeholders that airport operations have returned to normal, with flight activities and terminal services continuing without further disruption.
FAAN emphasized that aviation safety remains its highest priority and that the ongoing investigation will determine the precise circumstances that led to the incident, with appropriate measures to be implemented to prevent a recurrence.
The authority also expressed appreciation to passengers, airlines, airport operators and other stakeholders for their patience, cooperation and understanding during the incident.
FAAN reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, security and operational efficiency across Nigeria’s airports, assuring the travelling public that every necessary step is being taken to safeguard airport facilities and ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
