The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has declared that improved air connectivity across Africa is critical to unlocking the continent’s economic transformation, trade integration, and industrial growth.
Speaking through the Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, at the 2026 Annual Lecture of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport held in Abuja, the Minister stressed that aviation must now be viewed as a strategic economic catalyst rather than a luxury service.
The event, themed “Improving Connectivity Within the African Continent,” took place at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre and attracted stakeholders from the aviation, transport, logistics, and infrastructure sectors.
The Minister was quoted as saying Africa’s economic future depends heavily on the ability of countries across the continent to connect people, businesses, industries, and ideas through efficient, affordable, and sustainable transportation systems.
“It is both a privilege and a duty to address a topic that lies at the core of Africa’s economic future: Improving Connectivity within the African Continent,” she stated.
“Today, I address you not only as Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development but also as a strong advocate for Africa’s vast untapped potential. This potential can only be realised when our people, markets, industries, and ideas are connected efficiently, affordably, and sustainably.”
She further noted that aviation has evolved beyond passenger movement into a major driver of commerce, tourism, innovation, investment, and regional integration.
According to the Minister, Africa can no longer afford to remain one of the least connected regions globally despite its huge population, expanding markets, and abundant economic opportunities.
The lecture also focused on critical issues affecting the aviation and logistics ecosystem, including infrastructure development, manpower capacity building, digital transformation, regional airline partnerships, airport modernisation, and policies needed to strengthen intra-African mobility under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Following the keynote presentation, Mrs Kuku engaged participants during an interactive session where she addressed questions bordering on aviation infrastructure gaps, technology adoption, manpower development, and strategies for improving both domestic and international connectivity across Africa.
Stakeholders at the event commended ongoing reforms in the aviation sector, particularly efforts aimed at improving airport operations, enhancing passenger experience, attracting investment, and positioning Nigeria as a regional aviation hub.
Both the Minister and the FAAN Managing Director were recognised during the event for what organisers described as their significant contributions and giant strides in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
The lecture comes amid renewed conversations around aviation-led economic growth in Africa, with experts increasingly emphasising the need for stronger regional air transport systems, integrated logistics frameworks, and cross-border infrastructure collaboration to deepen continental trade and competitiveness.
